The frame on my 62 shows signs of surface rust... not scaling thank god. I know it will only get worse but what can I do to slow it down?

I have all this black stuff that looks like factory undercoating flaking off all over the place. Is that what it is?

I plan to go under and scrape as much as I can off the frame and any other area that needs to be addressed. Then I'm gonna give it the POR 15 treatment. is this the correct way to combat rusty frames that still have some life to them?

Can I bring my rig to a specialist that deals with this kind of preventive procedure?

That black stuff isn't really undercoating, but I do believe it's factory paint becauseI've noticed the same thing on my 62 and my former FJ40. Your plan to paint the frame with POR-15 or a similar product sounds good. Sure, you can hire someone else to do it, just make sure they're reputable.

I just don't want to waste time if applying POR 15 aint gonna work. I plan on being under the truck for a while scraping away at the frame.

I know there is a 3 step process with POR 15...

-cleaner/degreaser
-prep etch ( I bought this at Home Depot)
-then POR 15 paint.

Does anyone know what the cleaner actually is? I thought I might try denatured alcohol.

Suggestion for rust prevention: move out of the northeast.

Suggestion for proactive rust control: POR 15 is great to use on the frame. I've seen it 5 or 6 years old on some northeast frames, and they still look pretty much as they did when the por was originally put on. I recommend the stuff. As for a professional, look up a company called Ziebart. They do window tinting and some other random crap, but I've read that their rust control packages work real well. Look up the closest location to you, go down and talk to the guys about the process. They're open to questions.

My $.02, but don't ask me what my northeast rig looks like, :crybaby::crybaby:.

my rig is from Texas...but the guy who owned it for the past few years is from CT...The only reason why this rig aint mint in because he drove it in the winter a few times. Bummer! :(

I don't plan on using this in the snow...They use way, way , way too much salt out here. It's only gonna be a 3 season truck, maybe 2 season if the gas goes up to $5 a gallon.

I figure If I POR 15 the hell out of the belly of this rig, It should be good to go while I own it.

I bought a small can of POR 15...I may need to get more if I'm gonna do the frame. I forgot to get all the prep stuff so what can I get for degreasing at Home Depot?...something that won't leave a residue.

I already have the phosphoric prep etch.

brake cleaner works well after an oil based degreaser, it basically evaporates.

Sounds like you've already bought some stuff for the POR15 treatment. But you might also consider a yearly frame oiling. Lots less work, and cheaper, but you do have to do it once a year. No need to degrease, and the frame doesn't have to be completely dry.

Last fall I sprayed my whole frame down, inside and out, with Fluid Film. It's still wet, except where road spray has worn it off. Turned all my surface redness to black. I'll be doing this every year from here on out.

The whole frame took 6 spray cans, at about $7/can.
