Since (I believe) there is a relationship between engine vacumn and the brake system, is it necessary to have the motor running while bleeding the brakes?

no. bleeding is just to get the air out.
the vac runs the brake booster, that is all.
make sure you know how to bleed properly though.

Yes. No need to have the engine running. There are kits with hand pumps to use a vacuum to help bleed the lines.

If you live in the rust belt.....soak your bleeders with some PB 'Blaster......and be very Very VERY careful when you're loosening them up....they are tender.

thanks for the tip. What does one do if one strips or breaks one?
You could pull the cylinder and try to re-tap it but I would just buy and replace the cylinders if they are the original ones.
After repeated soakings with PB...try gently loosening/tightening them with a 6 point socket on a 1/4 drive ratchet ( so you can't get too much torque) . the key is lots of PB. & a good tight fit of the tool (tee hee).
