If you want something different, would you consider a tandem axle? Aussies have done it on 70's. Just a suggestion.

I had considered that exact idea till i saw what the 6X6 looks like and decided to pass for now.
 
May not be what you're looking for Wayne, but J C Whitney has sold the below dual wheel adapters for years. They work with the stock rims, though they say not to use them with aluminum rims. Not sure how much leverage this would put on the axle bearings. They do list a kit for a late model FZJ80... They sure would stick out well past the body. Maybe something that could be used on a 75/79 series pick-up with a custom bed that is wide enough to cover them.
