i have an '89 taco 1 ton dually sitting in the yard here, would you like some pics?

as a matter of fact, i will be removing the box to use for storage and parting out the rest, if you have a use for the whole rear end plus a brand new set of brake shoes and hardware...

i hear a rumour that you were making a trip up this way soon ...
what size are the rims?
what is the gearing?
what is the width of the axle inside inner tire to the other side same? width outside outer tire to other side same.

pics would be nice.

thanks Chang

reason for the dually is for stability ...
and to do something different.

thanks Chang, what size rims and what is the bolt pattern? i am to assume it is a FF rear axle or a usual mini truck rear axle?

This is a dumb idea but that has never stopped me from encouraging you in the past. The stock rear axle is about 8" too narrow for dualies so you're going to need some big spacers or swap out the axle. If you are not changing anything on the front, you'll need two spare tires on the rig and if that is the case why not just swap the whole axle out of a Dodge Sprinter? It has the correct width, cheap 16" wheels, 4:11 diffs. Plug and play.

I think a better plan would be to use full width, domestic, srw axles (Dana 60s, likely) and use six matching dually wheels. That will make you about 10" narrower than a domestic dually and should still leave just enough tire clearance to the frame. I don't know if dually rims will clear TREs etc on a srw front end. You may end up having to narrow the axle and using the dually spacers.

BTW, you must have gotten the only bad first gen Cummins Dodge. The rest of us love them.

A 3FE tow rig? seriously? This is a dumb idea.

blunt honesty, gotta love it.

maybe i need to take that dodge to someone that knows them and let them tell me what is wrong with it then. i love the ride, the front bench with all that storage in behind.
i don't like the lack of power and the elec O/D.

maybe i need to rethink this idea. i am getting a lot of negative feedback ... if the whole world tells you that your an idiot, maybe you are.

cheers

wayne what year is your dodge? Maybe its time to upgrade it to a somewhat newer one or a better one?
My friend keeps talking that he wants a 1989 dodge cummins.

Why not put a dana axle in the back?

a thing or two more to sit and think (or s*** and stink) about:
the one drawback of this rear is that in order to service the brakes, the entire inner hub must be disassembeled. it's a right pain in the arse. other than that, it seems to be pretty damnned solid and appears to be about the same as a 'cruiser ff rear other than the hub being set up to take duallys. if you have a chilton's toy trucks '70-'88 book, that will cover the dually rear if you want to look for yourself (pg. 435).

if i had the time and resources, what i might do with it is strip it down to the frame and wheels, finnagle a xx75 cab on it (with the right drivetrain) and make it into a work unit with a stonewell box. as it stands, i have a bj42, bj74, a gsxr750 front/rear end to put on the rz350, and a kwaka kz1000 mad max replica on the to-do list. i'm just assuming that you might be looking for an off-the-beaten-path project. it's always more fun to build than to buy.

edit: now that i'm looking at the chilton's diagrams, it might be possible to just use the axles, hubs, brake gear, etc. and put it on a 'crusier ff housing. then again, i might be talking out my ass...

(posted originally in the wrong forum)

i want to install duallies on my 75 and turn it into a tow vehicle but i can not find any information for 16X6 5.5 bolt pattern dually rims.
i know they must be out there somewhere?
any links?

cheers

Is the LJ78 so heavy that you need dual tires on a tow truck?:)

Pm sent crushers

thanks Clint.
Charles, maybe i will call it the PlayDo Recovery Vehicle, the PRV.

can you give me the year and vin number ( wayne@crushersrule.com ) and i can look up some part numbers to see if there are similar parts to swap.
i was thinking the same thing last night.

I remember seeing pics of 75 series tow trucks that were use in Sydney in the early 90's. D'ont know if they had dualies. Maybe somone down under might have photos.
