:flipoff2: Welcome to MUD!

so i'm down to two choices, KLR 650 or BMW F800 GS. The KLR is less $$$ so that means more money for mods, but i will spend most time on the freeway, also its pretty windy as well. F800 seems to be outstanding as well as a bit bigger so freeways will not be as much of an issue, still a bit more $$$. Hopefully i can squeeze in a test ride at some point in the near future. What say MUD?

why put the kawasucky in the equation at all? I had a KLR250 and it was a POS.

Stick with honda/yamaha/suzuki/ktm/ATK.

I'm kicking myself for not getting an NX650 for $1,500 a while ago. I wouldn't care what my rig got if I was riding the bike around 50%.

87mpg scooter...

1987 Honda Elite, 250 cc, $1500 obo

Congrats on being smart enough to choose a bright jacket. Thats hard to miss!

The photo doesn't do it justice, it's MUCH brighter than it looks. It's almost painful sometimes.

It's safety equipment, not a fashion statement. Same thing with the bright yellow helmet.

BMW

An F800GS is in my future too.

I'm 5'9" and have both feet flat on the ground when on my F650GS. The rear suspension can be changed for your height/weight by turning a knob under the seat (and the forks can be adjusted, but that's true of any bike).

The R1200GS is an awesome bike - and the bike I originally wanted - but for those of us who are inseam challenged, the F650GS is a lot easier to live with without modifications to the seat and suspension.

I would add, for some individuals actual "flat footing" may be less of a concern as experience is gained a confidence is raised. Not saying being on extreme tippie toes would be a good choice, but there is a little room for adjustment... I was on the balls of my feet when I bought mine, but a slight shift of weight and I could flat foot one side.. Then a different pair of boots with a little thicker sole changed the whole combination and I could just flat foot one side without the weight shift.. (wasn't intentional, just happened)....

Same height as sisukid, 32ish inseam, the Tiger was intimidating at first, but glad I got it...

I crawled all over the F800 GS at the dealer recently, nice choice imo.. I'm kinda curious about the F650 GS too..

:beer::cheers:

i'm 5'9 with same inseam as well, when you checked out the 800 how was the height? I thought they retired the F650?

I didn't actually sit on it, as I have no intention of buying, and it keeps the salesmen from bothering me.:D

There is a new F650 GS being released with the 800 afaik? Not sure when its hitting US shores, but was at least one test drive review on ADV rider from Canada already... My new 2008 F650GS is here! - ADVrider
Afaik, its actually the same engine as the 800 twin, just detuned..

Well, the wife said I could get a bike:) IF gas prices hit $5:frown: AND I would have to get rid of the Cruiser:crybaby:! I guess I don't want a bike that bad.

I'm fixing up a dual sport that I got for free. yeah, very cool. The seat is currently getting redone, I just need to change the oil and look for a new gas tank. Mine is a bit dented. She runs damn good.

It's an 87 Yamaha TW200. What a great little bike! They have quite a following, indestructible engines and stupid easy to ride. Not a lot of power at only 200cc's but they get the job done.

love the fatty tires :D this is a 2009 model
MSRP: $3,899

A FREE TW200? WHOAH, that's awesome!

They are very cool bikes. Offroad they will go nearly anywhere with the fat rear tire; excellent traction in all conditions.

any thoughts on fuel injection vs carb for bikes?

Yeah, it was going to be $100 but they said, ahh...just take it.

Here is is when I first brought it home. I've since cleaned it up, gotten wider footpegs IMI style, Pro-Grips 791's, new oil/filter, fork seals, seal savers (need to put on) cleaned rebuilt carb, junkyard bar risers, new rear fender, and the seats currently getting re-done. I should take an updated pic.

These little things just lug around sooo slow, and the tires rock lol. Waaaay different feel than my old DR250SE.

The FI bikes I've encountered are getting better fuel mileage for the most part... Not sure about maintenance of FI...

With carbs you have to consider the potential maint. of getting them/keeping them synced.... Its a pain in the ass on my bike for instance, because the middle carb on the triple is impossible to access...

fwiw..

My neighbor started talking about a dual-sport a couple of weeks ago, a Kawa 250 because the mileage is sooo much better than the bigger bikes.

He looked at one last week locally.

As of yesterday he called as far away as Ohio, none left

Oh yeah I didn't even think of multi carb bikes. In that situation FI is way way better.

Almost zero maintenance. The only thing that can fail is the fuel pump so if you go on an adventure trip you might carry a spare one just to be safe.
