I plan to set up a dual battery system. The second battery will be switched on to run the winch and other accessories. I will use a marine switch, etc. My question is: should the back up battery be a starting type battery or a deep cycle battery?

Most use a deep cycle for the second battery. Check out the outfitting section for extensive posts on dual battery setups.

Been reading about this. Winch manufactorers say you need lots of cold cranking amps for the winch. The winch motor is basicaly a starter motor. So it needs the hard punch of a cranking battery. A deep cycle battery is designed to power instruments, trolling motors, coolers, 12volt lights, Holding up under a slow draw-down. Deep cycle also can be drained and recharged many times with out "cooking" the works.

However, given the above information, I'll probably go with a battery like the Optima Yellow top seems to fit the bill for most folks (several companies make the same type) That battery has the cold cranking amps and fills the bill for the deep cycle use, At least that is what Optima wants you to believe.

I am led to believe that for extended winch use, you'r gonna cook something or drain the battery if you do not have the engine running and a alternator going that can keep the battery charged. A low battery and a motor under load will get you a burnt motor. so-I've-been-led-to-believe

Didn't answer your question...but maybe it'll help
