Just got my BJ70 here in California, and I noticed it has dual batteries. Do all the 85 have those, despite the 12 V system?

also, there is a knob on the dash, on the right to the pre glow light-it has a green dot on it. what is this for please?

finally, what fluids are you guys using in engine, tranny, trans and diffs?
thanks a lot for the help!

Yes, dual batteries in parallel so there is double the amperage assisting the starter to overcome the 3B compression.

I'll take a guess at the knob: Hand throttle control.

Where you are I would suggest any good 15/40 diesel specific oil. Make sure it is for diesel engines is the big thing, as the 3B will soot up an oil quickly. I forget the exact number/letter designation to look for. Names mentioned which seem consistant with Dino oil are DELO 400 15/40, Shell Rotella 15/40, but everyone seems to have their own fav brand. Some oil is better then no oil:-)

Any good quality 80/90 gearlube will do for the tranny/trans/diff's.

Yeah the only knob close to that spot it throttle control which I usually dial up when I start the engine cold. You can also dial it so the car will move forward without having to step on the throttle pedal.

As for oil the designation you're looking for is a "C" rated oil. In a gas engine it would be "SF" or "SG" etc. in a diesel it's "CF" or "CG" etc. The farther along the alphabet the second letter is the later standards it meets.
The easy way to remember is "C" for compression ignition and "S" for spark ignition.
Shell Rotella 15w-40 is a deisel rated oil as is Chevron Delo 15w-40 (most oils with a 15w-40 rating are made for diesels).

Cruiser-guy got it right, the "c" he is referring to is usually on the back side of an oil container. It's called the "API" sticker, for American Petroleum Institute. They classify oil by its quality. Find the highest letter, alphabetically after the "c". Don't use combination oils i.e. both a rating for a spark engine "SM",and compression engine "CJ"

Make sure for your batteries connection. Serie mean 24 V and parrallele is 12 V. And for the throttle, I think you have to turn it...not pulling on a BJ70.

Thanks guys!
I realized the turn-throttle is underneath the glow signal. just left to the glow plug light is a switch, not a knob-sorry for the wrong designation. it has a green dot that lights up when pressed. Is it the 4wd button? the 4wd light on the dash comes on when I shift the transfer...

A picture would go a long way here, Jan. Correct me if I am wrong, guys, but I thought Canadian BJ70's don't come with a vacuum actuated transfer. The transfer shifter should say 2H, 4H, N, 4L instead of H, N, L. If that is the case, the button couldn't be for the 2H-4H shifter, maybe something aftermarket the PO put in. The stock push button shifter (if so equipped) is a large square button that says "H4" on it.

You are right- 2h 4h N 2L. I agree it should not be a 4WD button. I'll get a pic and post it.
thanks!

I have never seen Vacume shift on our 70s??????

That is what I was saying. Canada only got the manual shift transfers in the 70 series.
