HELP - I have a 1979 FJ 40 and have just installed ARB front + back air lockers. I'm trying to understand how the FJ 40 "locking" hubs actually work (without ARB) and how they should best be used with ARB air lockers.

The Warn/Aisin/Selectro hubs on FJ40s work the same as any manual locking hub. When unlocked they allow the front wheels to spin freely, regardless of axle movement. When locked, they couple the front wheels to the axle so when the front driveshaft (4x4) is engaged the front wheels are powered.

Start in 2wd. If you don't get enough traction, lock the hubs and go to 4wd. If you still don't have enough traction, engage the rear ARB. If that still isn't enough traction engage the front ARB. If that isn't enough, you need to use your winch. What winch you ask? The winch you need to purchase because you now have the ability to get REALLY stuck.
