Driving home from Costco questions and P/S ????

So there I was, Driving home from costco with a load of goodies :D and the cruise cuts out momentarily and then resumes on its own. I think to myself, self, I wonder why it did that and then lo and behold, ten min later the same thing happens. This time I was paying attention and the E brake light didn't come on(yes it works) and the cruise light didn't flicker. I could duplicate the results by hitting cancel on the cc and then resume again. It happened one more time in the 30 mile trip.
So what you may ask, It gets better, about a mile from home I lost all power steering-completely gone, so as soon as I pull in the driveway and unload the goodies, I pop the hood and check the fluid. the truck has been off for about five minutes. Engine off the fluid looks gray  w/ a tiny bit of red tinge-obviously time for a system flush-but... Engine running the fluid is still gray, correct level and cycling as it shoud but all the sudden I have power steering again. Went out and drove it for 15 min, still P/S. Underhood looks normal-no leaks no loose parts nothing unusual.

Sooooo..... Any ideas on the causes and if they are possibly related?
Thanks
Dan

CC Prob.

Kliers,
I can relate to the cc issue you talked about...I've had a similar problem in my 80. It will cut out or it will not even turn on/work at times. I traced it to a short in the wiring and having fixed that I've had no further problems. I don't know about Pwr steering issue, Hope I never have to know through personal experience, but I'd like to know what the problem is once you've figured it out.

Hope I've helped

Thanks for the info PKP, hoping to find someone who has had a similar problem w\the P/S We'll see

Anybody???????

Dan

What happened to the engine oil pressure when the steering assist was lost?

Oil pressure and all other gauges were normal.

Anybody at all?????????????????

Easiest scenario to fix is a bit of junk clogged the valve in either the steering box or in the pump and nothing else is damaged,

If your fluid is any other color besides red or yellow/clear then it needs to be changed,

Cheapest place to start is power steering fluid flush to get the old fluid and other junk out

So I would start there it has likely never been done and is still running the factory fluid from 11 years ago put in by a guy in Japan,

If there is a lot of metal or other particulate in the fluid an inline filter like a magnafine might also be a good idea, if that does not stop it then you likely need parts, not to many in the system that could cause that problem,

I have heard the PS pump can be rebuilt have not done so myself might be a good next course of action after a fluid flush and relatively inexpensive

IIRC Doc has the same problem, have not read of a fix yet

You can read about changing the fluid and rebuilding the pump by searching

On a 91 your supposed to be able to retreive codes from the CC to tell you why its cutting out. I believe it said you could pull the codes before you shut of the rig after it has done what its doing. The proceedure is in the manual.
I don't know if the same proceedure would apply to your ride but someone will know here, good luck.

Thanks for the help.

Didn't I read somewhere that the CC would cut out if there was a thermal event? I seem to recall this and issues with other systems as precursors to other things?

May want to search on it. Just remembering vaguely so don't condemn the truck yet :)
