Friends I have run into a problem that has me stumped,I received my HZJ73 at the end of August and picked it up right from the docks, checked all the fluids there and proceeded to drive home.Leaving the shipping yard heard a growling noise whenever I pressed in the clutch, thought noisy clutch release bearing,no problem, following week ordered in a complete clutch kit from ENS, get parts, following weekend remove transfer and tranny only to be looking at a brand new clutch kit already installed, looks like a new flywheel also.I install the new parts from ENS just in case a problem with the previous ones.Checked flywheel for warpage trueness etc, everything good, get her all bolted together again, take for a test spin and same noise, everytime pushing in clutch and upshifting. So I think now maybe a tranny bearing problem, pull again, pull it apart, all within specs and looking good,no damaged gears, bearings or shafts, order a bearing kit and install, again just in case, bolt her back together again and same :censor: noise.Am I missing something so simple or just shouild I live with it.Shifts, drives and runs excellent, can run down the highway at 110km and smooth as silk,no noise, the noise only appears when upshifting, the speed or revs of the noise increases as you upshift from gear to gear, there is no noise when downshifting, could it be furture along the drive train, checked transfer case all specs good in there also, friend said could be a u-joint but this would appear at all times, same with rear axle I would think.
Hate to ask this late in the problem, but could this sound be common to these trucks I did not notice it from the BJ74,but the 13B-T motor drowns out alot of noise compared to the 1HZ.

Sorry for the long post, any help and advise would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you James...

no, the 5 spd tranny behind the 1HZ is a quiet baby. if you can live with it then leave it alone, if you can not then take it to a shop like G@Scruiserparts and get them to give it a ear...

Is there a spiggot bearing in there??A gearbox mechanic mentioned it to me when he did my gearbox but I cant see one in the FSM.
Symptoms that JimmyB descibed sound just like it:confused:

If so,you should be able to isolate by putting the T/case in neutral and running through the gears.

I was driving someones HZJ73 and it did the same thing, to me it almost seemed vacuum related - sounds weird though. Almost sounded like a vacuum sound/growl - like a release bearing but not.

if the plate was in wrong the truck wouldn't move. now if the release bearing was installed backwards it would make a noise, a real bad noise...

Thanks guys,It is definatly a growling bearing noise and not a vacuum sound-no sucky, sucky:grinpimp:and strange it only occurs on upshifting.Clutch disc is installed correctly and everything is working well, drives nice, just the noise,Wayne a reverse release bearing, man that would be a great sound, like engaging a starter with a running motor I would imagine, do not think the release bearing or fork would last too long on that mistake,I think I would willingly kick my own ass on that one.:D
Rosco I think you could be right about somehow being centered around a spiggot or pilot bearing.I did a search on the internet and all sites seem to indicate this as a source for the sound.Unfortunatly the truck came with a new clutch assembly and bearings and I have installed a new clutch assembly with bearings, the original bearing was good.Unfortunatly it did not even occur to me at the time to check the fit of the pilot bearings onto the input shaft of the tranny, was a nice fit into flywheel though.
If after removal of the tranny again and the bearing fit onto input shaft is good,I found a site that indicated other possibilities for a pilot bearing sound.
Input shaft is somehow not running true with crankshaft of engine, can be caused by bent input shaft,or could be slightly offset or not running completely inline with crank, front and rear faces of bellhousing not being parallel or rear of bellhousing not being parallel with rear face of engine.Might try loosening off the 4 tranny to bellhousing bolts and install a few shims on one side, running the transfer in neutral and shifting through the gears and see if any change,if not then will pull tranny again and check for possible bent input or a alignment problem.

How hard would it be to find a new or good used input shaft, are they fairly common? The machining of the bellhousing would be easy as I have access to a milling machine.

Thanks James...

The gearbox mechanic told me he had 3-4 complaints about his gearbox rebuilds that he had done. He sells them to parts stores that resell them to customers and everytime it had been that spiggot or Pilot bearing(Im not even sure where it is) because the owners never think to replace it .
I think the mainshaft runs into about $700,oops its much cheaper.

I would hang off on the main shaft. If it wasnt runnng true wouldnt it chew up the front bearing and be spewing oil into the bellhousing?

the spigot bearing is in the rear of the crank shaft it doesnt come with most clutch kits

Agreed. What the mechanic was telling me was that when he doesnt install the gearboxes he rebuilds ,the spiggot bearing gets forgotten and then they claim he sold them a bad box when it starts howling.
I paid him a little extra and he did it for me.;)

Drivetrain noise

I just wanted to use your thread to ask for help regarding a noise that I have noticed from my LJ70 drivetrain. When the car is standing still with the engine running and in neutral I hear a kind of grinding noise that disappear as soon as I put in the clutch. Any ideas of what the problem might be???

Is it like a hissing noise? Probably the bearings on the main shaft.
When you push the clutch pedal in it puts a small load on the gearbox and takes up the slack and stops the noise.
Depending on how loud it is ,it could last a long time

sounds like release bearing to me, when it is worn it makes noise when not tngaged but once engaged it goes away... for a while till itgets bad enough then it is noisy all the time... sometimes VERY noisy...
