What it looks like to me is the driveshaft is leaking, but not sure if it is the rear diff. Never Had to deal with anything like this before so I don't know what to start with. The picture was taken from the rear.

It's not your rear diff.

It looks like it just has/had too much grease in it, which had to go somewhere when the driveshaft was articulated. I'm sure someone smarter than me will step in with a better explanation though.

Thats a good thing - nothing wrong with grease exposed at the slip joint.

If seal are old and worn they allow grease to pass easily, not a bad thing. Not best case if doing water crossing or in deep sand.

Great care must be taken when lubing slide yokes when seal are tight, not to over extend.

Toyota has change the below recommendation to: Just lube until slide yoke begins to extend.

These old seal allowed grease to past them easily.

That's by design. There are a number of grease zerks on the slip yoke and u-joints of both the front and rear drive shaft. I try to shoot grease into those just about every time I'm under there (I think the Toyota service interval is every 5 to 10k?). I'd recommend pushing some new grease into yours as well, then wiping what excess may squeeze out. A lubed up truck is a happy truck.
