On the summer road trip with the family and my driver's door will not open. I think it has something to do with the electric unlocking system but can't figure out what.

Is there a way to reach in and unlock it manually at the latch?

Symptoms:
-Using the electric door lock I can hear the lock mechanism lock but cannot hear it unlock. All the other doors unlock.
-I managed to pull the inside pannel back. I reached in and unhooked the outside key locking bar. When I pull up I can hear the automatic lock locking. When I push down nothing happens.
-the inside locking mechanism feels stuck/stiff.

I would normally pull apart the passenger side door but on a road trip don't want to open a can of worms.

Thanks

Don't you have a small lever just above the interior interior latch handle that manually unlocks the door?? It's on every one I have ever seen.

Got it. It was a broken spring.

Steps to open the door:
1-lower the window.
2-pull up and back on the door panel.
3-use something long and thin to push down on where the spring sits. Just to the right of the green plastic.

Once the door is open unclip the rods to the mechanism (I remember 4), unscrew the three bolts and the window pane track holder bolt. The rest is obvious with the pictures.

Here's to mud:beer:

Trying to find a tool to get in there and press down as I’m in the same dilemma. Found something at Lowe’s for 1/8” diameter rod that’s 3 foot long. Do you think it will work?

I just opened up my door panel. I couldn’t see the spring because I did not pull out the whole mechanism. Where did you buy that spring at? Thank you for the good information.

I was on a road trip at the time so just bent the broken spring into a hook and put it back in place.

I did buy a package of random springs after this a Princess Auto, in Canada, but never when back to replace it. Not sure what the equivalent store in the US would be.

Do this and you'll have no worries about matching spring size/rate, etc. Same repair for me has had no issues in 6ish years now.

Take the last loop of the spring and bend it up until it's high enough to serve as a hook. No need to bend it any further than necessary as that could just create a new possible break point. Since it no longer has the more elaborate bends it originally had the new hook may be stronger than new.
