Anyone know of any shops that work on drive shafts in the Boston area, other than Brookline Machine?

thanks

brookline machine...is that the place thats in a brick 1 story building...more like in allston? on antworp?

if so...you dont want to drop it off there anyway...thats good....i droped my front drive shaft off there and it came back with dana u-joints in it...i was not happy...and they were not happy looking thru the garbage to get my old ends back to put on...so i can use toyota u-joints...not a nice place to deal with...all they had to do is replace the tube...and it was clearly wote down on slip...stay away from them...thats not even 1/2 the story

i did a quick look and found this place:
Atlantic Mach CO
45 North Beacon Street Allston, MA

and there are in Allston...i think i am getting old because i cant remember who messed up my driveshaft...you can call and ask them :)

they have both been around for quite awhile...that was 12 years ago...and they are both still there.

it was either Brookline or Atlantic...at the time i was kicking myself because i should have went to the other

I used Brookline Machine (the North Andover shop) a few years ago to balance both shafts in the Cruiser, Tedd from Cruiser Solutions told me they do all his driveshaft work, highly recommended. They were really cool, the guy let me come back into the shop and watch him do the job. It was kinda a slow day so he gave me the tour, explained everything he was doing, etc. He told me they only use OEM U-joints on Toyota shafts, they are better.

I would use them again.

I've used the division of Brookline Machine down here in Providence with good results all the time.

Thanks Rick. I brought in some Japanese joints from Cruiser Outfitters when I dropped the shafts off at Brookline Machine in Allston. Had a good interaction with the guys at the counter and they seemed into working on them. Picking them up tomorrow so we'll see.

good luck, hope it works out well.

Hey all, if you have issues with Brookline Machine, the owner is actually a neighbor of mine. I have used him several times (Allston shop) with very good luck. I think what you request to be done vs. what you assume will be done could be two different things. If anyone wants to get in touch, I will pass along his name. he's a good guy, cares about off roading a lot (he does a fair amount of stuff with some local heep clubs), and likes to work with people on what they need done.

I hope this helps. Randy, I could definitely get you two in touch. I think you'd like working with them.

I ended up having a good experience at Brookline Machine in Allston.

Was originally quoted $365 for lengthening one shaft, shortening the other, and installing 4 self-supplied u-joints at $12 for each install. They added an hours worth of labor in case they needed it.

They only replaced two u-joints as the other two were ok. Ended up costing $298, and they painted the shafts, which was a nice surprise.

They said they have been doing a lot of work for the local Jeep clubs and like the work. They also have many parts for pto winches in stock and can do custom work. I know JohnnyC had a bad time with them in the past but they seem to be better these days.

I've had 2 d-shafts done over at Brookline Machine. The first time they did one for me, it was too long, which could have been my mistake in measuring. Anyhow, they retubed it for free.

I like those dudes.

Randy, glad to hear you had a good experience. Did you meet Brew by chance? He's the owner, nice guy, and wants to do more off road work.

Ian

Nope. He's got a mustache and brownish hair. Probably 6 feet tall. He spends a lot of time in the other shops (I think they've expanded south too). Anyways, glad you had a good experience. I hope to have them rebuild my xfer case soon....

They did the 4.10 gears I got from Dave and they came back looking brand new (exterior painted and interior cleaned to bare steel).

I have a very heavy (sched 40) driveshaft that I had initially made myself. I've been chasing down vibration issues, and since the driveshaft had to be shortened anyhow, I took it to the Allston shop. The short version is I took it to the N Andover branch and Tom there straightened and rebalanced it for me.

He is a really good guy, doesn't look at non-Dana parts and start being an a******, drives an FJC etc. He made me a regular weight (street and trail spare) driveshaft out of two other driveshafts, one with a good CV, one with a good slip yoke, and didn't blink or give me needless s***.

He let me watch the whole process of straightening and rebalancing the shaft, and bitched the whole time about the way they do things in the Allston shop. (The guy who was in Allston until a couple weeks had a brain hemmorage, so I don't know who's doing the work now, but it sucked.)

The result for me is I'm not going to bother going to the place close to me, I'm going to drive up out of my way to get work done.

Rick, Tom says he hasn't seen you in a few months, and either you should stop by, or he misses you, or he misses the way you walk or something. I don't really remember.
