Hi all,

The BJ42 roof is coming off this week and a bikini top is going on for the summer.
I was thinking about taking the doors off as well.

Has anyone had any problems with the doors off being "legal" or not in Vancouver?
From what I have read you could buy the BJ42 with no doors from the factory and therefore it was a stock factory option and is therefore legal.

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

If you can find some kind of proof that they came with no doors as an option, then you can. Otherwise it's illegal, not that that has ever stopped me.
There is a pretty extensive thread on this subject over on bc4x4, it comes up at least once a year. Apparently tube doors are illegal as well, which was news to me.

I tried to find evidence that some newer (1970+) 40 series came from the factory with factory soft tops in North America. I couldn't find a thing. FJ25's, not a problem. If you find something Jonathan, be sure to share. I was pretty sure that factory soft tops were optional, but can't find proof.
Now, having said that, I sure see a lot of jeeps running without doors, including 4 doors. These never came from the factory with soft doors, soft tops... yes, doors no. I'd be curious to know if they hand out tickets. I'll bet when a cop sees an old "jeep" (40 series LC) he probably figures it didn't come with a hard top. I believe CJ5's came from the factory with a soft top option.

X2 never been issued a ticket ,been doing it for at least 20 years. i've been pulled over for speeding and nothing mentioned about no doors

routine pull overs been given ticket for failing to produce a drivers licence ,no mention of missing doors

pulled over for too many people in rig , no mention of missing doors .

pulled over for a seatbelt check been given a warning for no belt on my wife :bang:

no mention of missing doors .

i have never been talked to about not having doors .

go for it you will Love it , i get my rig on the road tomorrow ,no roof and no doors

:meh:

ive run with top and doors off for 12 years now (spring to fall) and never been harassed.

I've never had a problem either... I run mine with no doors, no roof. I've been pulled over a couple times just so they could look at it. I did have a Delta Policeman tell me that the only reason I don't get a ticket for it is because of the 4 point harness that I make my daughter wear... I only wear the lap part of the harness... He also added that the modified roll cage is a benefit. There are no mirrors on it either other than my rear view. Nothing has ever been said. :steer::clap:

so jim got a ticket today $107 going over the Alex Fraser bridge for not having doors on his 40. he asked the cop about the older cj and it dose apply for them but not the lancruisers. but you are allowed half doors, soft or hard, he sayed as long as there doors.

the cop told him also that they all got emails to crack down on the no doors this year.

DOH! :crybaby: i go over the alex fraser everyday . no ticket yet .

might have to find some doors.

Didn't they have a nylon strap in place of doors when the top is off?

Probably not nylon but yes there was a webbing strap that clipped across the door opening on factory soft tops. The front post had an anchor loop to clip to.

I got a ticket today on vedder road in chilliwack...$109, $25 less if i pay within 30 days. I really want to dispute it, can't we all pool our minds together and figure a way to beat the system or change the law? How is it any different from a 78 CJ? oh wait our trucks are stronger :D the irony of my situation is that the cop that gaveme the ticket was on a motor bike....because that is so much safer than a cruiser with no doors?

Prime example of the lack of reason in the law. Pretty much the same as certain people targeting RHDs because they claim they are "unsafe". As Jeff said at the beginning the law allows it only if the vehicle came that way from the factory. I suggest you pay your fine unless you can prove your LC came that way from the factory. If you want to fight the stupidy in the law, bother your local MLA.

We need to find a supply of FJ25's, they came with factory soft tops. They reason they took the CJ5 off the road was safety concerns i.e. rollovers. they made the CJ7 wider to help. I don't believe FJ40's were ever targeted the same way, I think the unsprung weight made them a lot harder to tip. I wish I could find any literature to support a factory soft top FJ40, any vintage.
