Just bought a '96 Cruiser and need to disable the feature that locks the doors on start-up.

I know this has been posted here before (probably a number of times) but after searching every combo I can think of for the last hour I give up.

I disabled it on the '97 but that was 6 or 8 years ago and don't remember how many times you have to rub your belly while tapping your head to do it.

I don't want my buddy ripping off the door handle next time we see birds in the road.

Thanx, Jim

found it

here is the way to do it in case others have the same problem-

IMO this should be in the FAQs

Automatic Door Locking / Unlocking Function:

The factory setting for the automatic door locking and unlocking function is on.

1: Sit in the drivers seat with the drivers door open.

2: Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn it to on (not acc) 5 times (on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on-lock, on) within a 10 second period. The status monitors LED turns on, and the piezo chirper sounds once.
***You must perform the next steps within 30 seconds***
Select the operating mode:

Automatic door locking and unlocking on: Close the drivers door. Turn the ignition switch to the lock position. The piezo chirper sounds once, and the exterior lights flash once.

Automatic door locking and unlocking off: Close the drivers door once, then open and close it one more time. Turn the ignition switch to the lock position. The piezo chirper sounds twice, and the exterior lights flash twice.

If you do not turn the ignition key to lock, or exceed 30 seconds during the programming steps, the status monitor's LED will turn off and the previous operation mode will remain.

just did it and it worked!!!

Now to see if I can find some birds......

That is hilarious!! My buddy did the same thing while smashing his face into the window! I am gonna try this.

Are there any other tips like this one? Seatbelt dinger, running lights, or anything like that?

Is this different for a 93? I do not have the factory FOB but that should not matter.

Have you tried smashing your face into the window yet?

My 93 doesn't lock the doors on start-up.

My 92 locks the doors on start up and it drives me crazy! Will this work for the 92?

Thanks for the procedure. It work well after I figured out how to count to 5..

I could not get it to work and I am NOT talking about smashing my face into the window Mr. W ;)

I could not make it work on my 92. I guess it took a couple of years for Toyota to get enough complaints. On my wife's 2009 Rav4, almost all the features are selectable. I had Toyota dissable the daytime running lights before I took it off the lot!

I tried this and could not get it to work on my 94 FJ80. Does anyone have anything else to try? I don't want my already tough to find actuators wearing out! If it helps, as soon as I turn the key to ON it locks them and when I turn it back to ACC they unlock. And to no surprise to me my local dealership had no answers.

I just tried this on my 96 lx450...worked ;)

Awesome resurrection @Jung4x4 . I am trying this out over the weekend.

This depends on what alarm system was installed in the vehicle. The RS3000 auto door lock is a selectable menu item explained on page 20 of the manual.

I used the process from @chukarhiker above on my '97 last night with success.

Thanks for dredging this back up. Now I won't lock the wife out of the truck accidentally just as she's reaching for the door handle any more!

This worked on my 97. It took a few tries, leave the key in the on position the fifth time and then close, open, and close the door. Continue to leave the key in the on position and wait about 10 seconds. Than start the truck taking the key from the on position to start. The first few times I tried it didn't work and I was going back to lock before starting the truck.

Did not work on my 94:(
