Door Strap Limiter Install

You've probably seen or personally experienced Door Stop failures like the ones shown in these pictures. I decided to replace the old Door Stops with these Door Check Straps from James Duff Enterprise. Their web site is http://www.jamesduff.com

I'll walk you through the steps in the posts to follow.

Create Backing Plate and Modify Footman

I first cut a 4"x2"x1/4" backing plate for the Footman Loop from some steel that I had lying around. I drilled two 17/64" holes and threaded them to fit a M8x1.25 bolt.

I then squeezed the footman loop on one end of the strap until it was 2.75” wide. I had to close the jaws of the vice to about 2.5”. The loop then sprung back to the desired width.

Attach Strap to Hinge and Mark Holes on Door

The next step is to bolt in the squeezed footman loop on top of the inside portion of the lower door hinge.
With the strap in place, I then positioned the door so that it was 3” or 4” from the mirror and marked the location of the holes on the door for the other end of the strap.

Drill Holes on Door

After using the hole-punch to mark the center, I drilled two 21/64” holes for the stainless steel bolts.

Thread Wire and String

I then removed the door access panel and threaded a wire through the top hole and out the access panel.

I took some string and tied a spare washer about 2’ from the end, and then threaded the string through the top hole of the backing plate.

Pull Backing Plate to Hole and Screw in Bottom Bolt

I tied the end of the string to the wire and pulled the string and backing plate into the door by pulling on the wire.

I lined up the hole in the door with the backing plate using a pick. I carefully screwed in the bottom bolt with just a washer on it.

Tighted Bolts and Remove String

I tightened up the bottom screw to hold the backing plate in place. I could then remove the string and put the cover back on the door access panel.

I carefully bolted in the footman loop into the top hole and tightened it down.

With the top bolt tight, I removed the lower bolt and put it through the footman loop to finish the install.

Final Comments

These Door Check Straps are hefty and the footman loops are larger than I expected. I was very impressed by their size and strength. They are a quality product and should last a long time. By bolting them to the hinge, I will be able to easily remove them when I have the top off and take off the doors.

I have the same problem on my passenger side door. The stock limiter on my 67' is ripping right off the door. I'm going to weld mine back on though.

Nice install.
I used similar straps on mine that I pulled from the rear doors of an early 80's full size gm van. The one side has a slide out pin (instead of the footman loop) to allow easy door removal.
