i got into this today and had to back out because i can’t leave it on the street unlocked.

is there a thread or a video somewhere for the removal and replacement?

i got the harness unplugged, three screws out at the end of the door, removed the bolt for the actuator, unclipped the white spacer deals and then unbolted the door lock lever and the bolt for the hinge mechanism.

but that sucker is still way behind the sheet metal and i can’t figure out if i need to try to pull the whole thing out or if it is hung up on something back there.

also it would be nice to know i have the right part for the DS rear actuator. there are some R and L markings on these things and it is not really obvious what they mean.

You need to unclip the 2 connecting rods. The plastic clips can become brittle, so be careful with them. They can both be moved out of the way, along with the metal shield piece. Then the entire assembly with the actuator can be slid out of the lower opening.

I replaced both actuators on my LX450 a few months ago. Takes about 15 minutes per side, but I took the time to spray down and clean up the entire mechanism, clean up the inside of the door, spray some Fluid Film around, etc, so it wound up being more of a small project for me.

Also, go around and tighten those 3 phillips screws on the other doors. I noticed that they become loose over time.

thanks man.
do those metal wires get unhooked somehow at some point? they attach at the door handle and go all the way back to attach near the actuator mechanism. i can’t see how i would detach them /before/ removal.
also, are you saying the actuator and whatever it is attached to has to slide out the lower hole where the big arrow is and not the hole right next to it?
i which case does the lever need to be tilted straight up so you can slide the whole 2 foot long assembly down through the lower hole or something.
THANKS

In your picture, if you follow the top connecting rod all the way to the left, you can just see the plastic clip I'm referring to. There is one for each connecting rod that secures it to the mechanism. They flip up and allow the connecting rod to be removed from the mechanism. Then you can pop each rod out of the plastic holder on the door on the right side of your picture.
The long rod can be retracted to get out of the hole by moving the door open handle.

At this point, the whole mechanism will fall out and you will have to wiggle it out of the large opening that the arrow is pointing to.

OK. i could barely see in there.
there are two (white?) plastic clips that hold the wires from the door handle to the actuator and whatever it is attached to? and these flip UP to let the actuator loose? then you just shove the new actuator up into the lower hole and get those wires clipped back on to the new one?

hey man. thanks a ton.
do you remember what you did when you got here? did you unclip that wire to the handle (mine does not want to move) or do you unbolt the whole handle?

Why are you messing with the outer door handle?
The door handle can remain in place.
The entire door lock assembly with the actuator attached comes out as 1 piece. The actuator is held in place by 2 small screws.
This all becomes obvious when it's removed.

because i couldn’t get the third wire rod off. it’s captured in there. and you can’t drop the actuator and the mechanism it is attached to unless you unhook that wire rod somehow, unhook some studded mechanism (which you can’t do unless you could turn it a full 90 degrees whixh you can’t) or you have to unbolt the handle and dishbit through the hole and then drop the whole damn thing. detach, re-attach and fish the whole damn thing through again.
maybe i’m missing something.

Maybe I'm remembering this wrong, but you only need to unclip the 2 connecting rods, remove the 3 screws and the 1 10mm bolt securing the actuator tailpiece, and the whole thing falls out. The slotted piece connected to the door handle just lifts off the mechanism and will flop down. Make sure it's in the correct position when reassembling.

no. it’s captured by the rod that travels from the handle down to the assembly. and you can’t get to the actuator without removing the whole assembly
i found that to be a proper two day clusterfuck.
but i did get a tan.

<edit: this little ****er. captured by the plastic piece at the top and i am almost certain i would have busted the black plastic trying on the handle trying to get that thing out. and the bottom is an oblong stud that you could only remove if you could rotate one part of the assembly which i couldn’t find the space to do.

Well, don't know what to tell you then.
I replaced both rear door actuators and didn't remove the outer door handle on either side. It was literally a 15 minute job.
man. well thanks for helping me get er done. i’d still be at it if you hadn’t bailed me out. and i’m REALLY glad i’m not still out there!
only way i can see that being easy is if someone busted the yellow clip and the metal rod is just slipped in there without the yellow clip. that was a bitch.

The yellow clip is there to keep the rod in place, just like the other ones.
Once the clip is rotated off the rod, the end of the rod should just pull out. Exactly like the other connecting rods. They're all the same kind of clip, just different sizes.
Shoot some WD40 all over that and I bet it'll fall right out.

i should have tried it when off the vehicle i guess. but this one looks different to me. maybe WD 40 would have worked. mine didn’t seem like it would go anywhere.
