taking my hardtop off for the summer. What can i use as a seatbelt? Looks like the stock belt is useless...

and again, NO perm. modifications!!

what did the factory/dealers say to do?

the hardtop on the FJ40 is independant of the seatbelt...doesn't the shoulder portion tie in with the roll cage?!?

the three point seat belts have a tab that bolts to the roll bar and one on each side of the seat. CCoT has the setup, but you could make it yourself from much cheaper.

the seat belt has three conection points, one on the side of the seat, second is the "real" part, third is the loop thing about head level. last two are on the top.

or am i crazy?

All the stock seat belts I have seen attach to the seat and the roll bar only--not to the top.

Look on the roll bar and see if there is a bracket that the seat belt can bolt to, should be on the front of the rollbar about shoulder height. My '78 has 2 sets of belts per seat, one set bolts to the hardtop and the other set bolts to the rollbar.

The top "pulley" of the shoulder belt bolts into the hard top or into the roll bar. Early hard tops (like mine, originally-I ended up getting a later hard top) did not have the attachment point, because they had lap belts only. The shoulder belt fits better when it is attached to the hard top (angle is better) so I just attach to the roll bar when the top is off.

You could just get lap belts, or an aftermarket harness to use for when the top is off, but if you have a stock roll bar, that is where it goes. Same bolt and everything.

Course, if you have an aftermarket roll bar, you probably won't have the attachment point.

regardless of whether you have an attch point or not, you need to get a 3point belt and use it.

it's stupid to ride around without a seatbelt on, and just plain idiocy to do so when in a cruiser without a top on it, or even doors.

i know people will say that they do it, and to stop being so picky abt it, but really, everyone needs to buckle up.

you do it on the trail goin .5-3 mph, so why not on the road goin 35-70?

ther are two point that hook up to the hard top. do BOTH go on the roll bar? One up and one down? it didn't look like it would fit... but i was having a lazy moment.

Wow. I think that the lower point you are thinking of goes on the side/rim of the truck, not the hard top. But maybe something is different on '78s?

though he was talking about a simple tab thing... i will check it out closer tonight.

if it bolts up to the rollbar, then i'm all set and happy.

thanks so far guys!

Just bend a flatbar bracket (1-1/2" x 1/8" stainless flatbar makes a good bracket, but mild steel works also) that extends from a rollbar mounting bolt to the existing threaded hole in the tub upper rail (just above and slightly off-set from the rollbar mounting bolt). Drill the bracket to mount as noted above, and drill it to hold the seatbelt retractor. Move your retractor down from the normal mounting spot on the top to the flatbar bracket that you've just installed. The seatbelt pivot point attaches to one of the rollbar clamp bolts where the rear horizontal bar attaches to the middle vertical bar. Easy to build, works well, and is certainly stronger than the normal mounting point in the hardtop.

Good Luck.

aftermarket seat belts are only $17-18, or about $30 if you want retractable

All I can do is recomend liberal use of sunscreen and to wear the tightest fitting pants you own. Topless and beltless, although liberating, may be a dangerous proposition.

i had a 77 fj40 and the seat belts also mounted to the hard top . the stock roll bar had no brackets for the seat belt . for a quick fix .all i did was bore some holes right through the roll bar and bolt the stock seat belts to the side of the roll bar . since then i've upgraded to a full cage with a proper seat belt setup .

On Petes '78 we bolt the loop piece from the hard top to the lower of the two bolts where the roll bar bolts together.

Would'nt the easiest option be to remove the middle Passengers Seat Belt and fit it to the Drivers side? - Unless it's illegal to use a Lap Belt, Where a 3 point originally was. :-*

checked it out last night and it DEFF is mounted to the hardtop twice. i will have to make a bracket so as to not modife the cruiser perminatley.

sportcruiser, where would i get this "flatbar bracket"? and how the heck do i bend it? drill w/ a titanium bit i suppose?
