Does this mean theres a way to remove that "tint" on 98-03 Hundys?

Thanks Golgo, I don't understand why the thinking there is the tint on the rear hatch is any different than that on the sides.

@GregLCA You have the correct link.
Funny how we just went through that for 80's and now the 100 Series guy found it too.

@89cruiserfj62 the reason I thought it was different is because of the defrost grid and lack of movement. Since the side windows in an 80 all move and rub on seals, the tint needs to be more durable. The back window doesn't move, but does have a defrost grid and maybe the coating is different to account for the temp changes.

However, it seems the Wheel cleaner worked on both windows with no problem.

So Eagle One Chrome Wheel Cleaner definitely works on the rear door 80 series window.....

After: You can see in the upper right corner, the reflective tint is gone from the inside of the window.

The Eagle One Chrome wheel cleaner contains phosphoric, oxalic, and hydrofluoric acids. Eagle One also makes an Etching Mag Wheel Cleaner that contains these acids as well as sulfuric acid. I might test that out as well.

To achieve this result, I sprayed it and scrubbed with a scuffing pad for a few minutes.

If it's strong enough to eat the tint... ya might want to test it on the rest of materials it's going to contact, e.g. plastic/rubber trim, interior panels, etc.

It definitely removed the tint, but the glass underneath was cloudy in some places as a result. The process needs to be refined a little. Not sure if the cleaner is too strong, or if the scrubbing is what did it.

THIS is the thread I started in the 80 section. I found a Coating Deletion Wheel that is made specifically for this purpose it seems. Its the next thing I want to try.

I bet if you hit it with a glass polish after using the wheel cleaner it would clear the cloudiness right up! :hmm:

Anybody have an update or any more input on this? Along with the wood on the dash, the bronze tint is the last remaining bit of '1990s' remaining on my 99 and I'd like to get rid of it and replace it...

I tried to do this today, and failed. Maybe not an aggressive enough approach?

What I did: Taped off the rear window. Sprayed some Eagle One Chrome Wheel Cleaner on a sponge, using the sponge, wet the window. Let it sit for a minute or two, then tried a mild scrubbing with a non-scratching kitchen scrubber and when that didn't work tried a Mr Clean magic eraser. All failed so I just cleaned it up and abandoned the project for today - got a nice clean window out of it tho...

I got nothing here - how hard, and with what sort of scrubbing device, do I need to attack this with?

Wanted to bump this again.

I'm really thinking about getting into a hundy, and I've been scouting for 05-06, but I want to consider an older year and just update the front clip and rear tails. The ONLY thing keeping me from considering them is that outdated tint. Has there been any for sure answer on removing this? I have big plans in mind for this build and want to make sure I can get that off completely and replace with black tint.

I haven't revisited the subject since but in case you didnt know, you can at least widen your search to include 2004 models as they don't have this tint.

No need to strip it. Just have a reputable tint place install your new tint. I have a 98 LX and I gave up looking for the matching bronze for the front. I had Formula1 Pinnacle tint installed all the way around and the underlying tint didn't impact it at all. Don't overcomplicate it.

^^ ditto. Just install whatever tint you want.
