Do you think I should?

Should I R&R those front-end suspension components?

OK folks...with 105K on my beat-to-death 100, I was thinking:

Maybe I should replace the upper ball joints, my other CV joint (one is 1-yr old due to a dealer goober), bushings, and misc front suspension components, incl wheel bearings?

The truck rides like new, though the way I baby this thing I thought it might benenfit from this maintenance.

What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea...wait until issues arise?

THANKS!

Like Phil says, have your mechanic do an inspection next time it is in for something.

When I had the front rotors replaced at 85k they inspected the wheel bearings and said they were great.

My mechanic just did wheel bearings on an LX470 at 150k that he has been working on since around 30k. New joints too.

You should replace the other CV and sell me the old one as a spare:D

Nah...

I`d change `em @ 200,000 miles...by then, Your 100 might ACTUALLY need them ! ;p

Considering the infrequency of those items failing (in the first 10 years) on a Toyota, I would wait a while...Unless of course, you already have the front end apart for another reason and figure "eh..what the heck, I am already in here "..

:D

You should consult with ATS before you do anything... ;p

Heh Heh Heh.... :D

I wouldn’t, it isn’t broke, then don’t fix’it! Just keep up on all service.

I wouldn't bother unless there's play in the joints/bushings. I'm still using the original 20 yr old Koyo bearings on my '86 at 200K mi (first repack at 102K mi), so I can't imagine a LC needing new bearings at 100K mi unless you played U-boat commander and never repacked them.

Consulting with anyone mechanically minded would be a great start for him.:flipoff2:

We dont see wear requiring replacing of the parts meansioned in the first 250 k KM [not miles] with normal use and good service history, other than the top ball joints, which I would do as preventitive maintenance around 150k KM [not miles] if I owned one.

Wheel bearing servicing here normally is every 40k km [not miles] with 40k washa nd repack, 80k wash and repack 120k need replacing being most normal, sometimes 160k km [not miles] on more road going versions.

If they go straight to 80k km [not miles] with bigger tyres and off road use with no servicing, they normally require replacement then we find here.

Don't know how you expect anyone to awnser that question correctly without putting it on a lift and checking it out??

Everything has been looked at and is fine right now. I asked the question because of that. What might be fine today could be ready to fail soon based on mileage and the way I use it. My thought was to replace some components as preventative maintenace despite them being expensive.

Over the next 3 months I have a 2000-mile trip planned (with sand dunes) and a very difficult rock-crawl trail run for another mag shoot that should eat up my bumpers and sliders.

From the answers so far I read that it might be too far on the preventative side and that I should leave things alone for a while more.

Thanks to all for their opinions.

I'll buy and second 100 for that project if you're up to making a "deal" on the experiment?

Sounds like a great plan for you john, you would get to see the top of some of these trails and obsticles then, instead of selecting reverse to back down after the poser photo's :flipoff2:

Uh Oh...He is on to `ya John ! ;)

I second Christo on this one! Cut out the I.F.S.(Inferior Friggin S**t!) And axle swap it with an 80 axle and coil springs. A friend of mine actually did this 2 years ago on his 100 and after alot of trial and error finally got it right but he is a novice compared to what i have heard about the capabilities of Slee Off-Road!

Matt:cheers:

No doubt !

I would lke to see pics of that rig too !

Well, while my dealer was inspecting my TRAC/VSC system (all works, but indicator lights were malfunctioning...I'm getting a new TRAC/VSC computer) and while in there found my upper ball joints were leaking some, so they're replacing them free.

Those were my main concern. I'm putting this subject to bed. Thanks all!
