Do you prefer to drain from radiator petcock or lower radiator hose?

Is there any way you could drain at the lower hose but not have to actually pull the hose off the metal pipe? Almost like using a sleeve similar to what people use for a water temp gauge.

But with some sort of threaded drain plug?

Definitely possible but probably not worth the cost/effort to procure and install. Plus it adds three more places for a potential leak. I think for the frequency of coolant changes (every 2 years or so) either the petcock or radiator hose removal (and associated mess) is tolerable.

I recently did a cooling system rebuild on our BMW and was pleasantly surprised on how easy those hoses were to remove and install. For those that haven't worked with them there's a metal clip that you release with a screwdriver and off it comes. No hose clamps, no twisting, no cutting, no guesswork on hose clamp tension.

Here's the type of snap-on tool I use for hose removal:

Set, Radiator Hose Pick, 2pc

There's similar products from other vendors too. I just got the snap-on tool for free :)

cheers,
george.

Most modern cars are using this system now, in particular on intercoolers etc. The problem is when the 'O' ring inside fails you have to buy the whole pipe!

And of course they are not cheap.

I'll have to use a pick on the hose and the garbage bag in the bucket method. Thanks @george_tlc and @NLXTACY
You guys are pros at the game for us newer guys.
