Do you need to use RTV when replacing VCG?

I'm replacing the Valve cover gasket and wonder if RTV (the blue stuff) is needed or just an extra? PO used it and it got all over. I'm guessing this is actually part of the reason for the leak.

no just a gasket, use a plastic scraper to clean off all the old RTV, if there is a littlle fit of factory grey or red sealent near the half moons at the front of the head leave it alone,

wipe the seal seat down with solvent for final clan and then lube the seal with fresh oil. do not get solvent on rubber parts.

I use RTV to hold the gasket in place while installing the valve cover.

That's what I was gonna say: not as a sealant, just as an adhesive to adhere it to the valve cover before installation.
