I would like to fabricate some rcok sliders for my 96 FJ80, but need to find where I can possibly get some good steel that insn't so damn heavy that it lowers the LC an inch. I have some really heavy duty steel tubing used in the oil fields but it is like 1/8 in. thick and would be overkill (like killing mosquitos with a shotgun).

Any advice would be great.

With the weight of the 80, that's not really overkill to be honest.

sliders? made for bashing on rocks?

if so, the more strength the better. How heavy can the tubing possibly be?

my chain link fence pipe sliders didn't last very long...not really. I promise I'm not a moron, I didn't do that. (does it count if you say it yourself?)

1/8" is what lots of folks here use. 3/16" or 1/4" is too heavy IMO. I think you're talking about 45 pound per slider using 1/8" thick wall.

I thought 3/16 was what most were using?

Slee's are 3/16" wall, I believe.

1/8" in definately not overkill. 3/16" IMO is. That increases your weight by 33% and the benefits are not there for using such a heavy metal. I made mine out of 1/8" and Ive slid my truck many times over rocks and logs, no probs.

Sorry, I should've said that most home made sliders are out of 1/8" wall!

One thing to keep in mind is that the cumulative weight of all of the crap that we add over time can be quite high! So, as you're planning on making sliders, think light but strong. If you're bending 1/8" wall of a square/rect tube, then you're hitting the obstacles very hard. At this point, you may have other damager, or worse, some loss of your teeth! A little flex in the slider system isn't necessarily a bad thing IMHO.

flex! your not gonna flex, your gonna rip the steel open or at the least dent the crap out of your sliders..

Also remember that adding weight with sliders lowers the center of gravity.

If you're ripping slider steel open with an 80 that's using 1/8" wall thickness, then you're wheeling way harder than the average Joe on this board :D

Guarantee 1/8" ain't too thin. Steel is expensive now, save the money and weight.

I used 3/16 for the ones i made there heavy but they want bend much.

3/16” is what Metal-tech uses for 40/55 and now the 80 sliders (not out yet). 3/16” is a good balance for strength to weight. Most people who buy them pre-made don’t want to buy them again or wish to accept them denting as OK. If you make your own, go crazy and make them as light as you think you can. Things like outer rub rails of 1.5” .120” tube will help stiffen up the box tube. However direct pivoting hits from below may…..will dent them in. If you ever need to make another pair due to damage, no problem you have practice!

i would never sell a set made with 1/8" (accept to mace :D )

Ahhh Mace is too cheep to BUY sliders. He would just ARC weld (his famous welds mind you) a few “barrowed” Loss Vegas stop sign posts to his door sills.

Russell,

Do a search here and look at what some of the other guys have done. If you settle on a design....but don't want to do the welding yourself, then just specify what materials you want and let a welding shop locate the material. I know a guy here that used to fabricate roll cages for racers, he can do the job if you don't find someone local. I could bring them up to you, or you could come down here and we'll install them.

Let me know if I can help.

Uncle Flint.

Ken's are 3x4x3/16 and 2x0.120DOM tube IIRC.
Somehow 120 lbs or so sounds right.
