do I really need a cross member? Is anyone running without one? (1 Viewer)

Are you talking about it hanging off the back of the bell housing with out additional support. Or do you think you need to remove the round cross member behind the parking brake drum? Inquiring minds want to know, I run mine without additional crossmember support, no problem, Larry

Yes it does, his post dosen't say he dosen't or did I miss something? Still confused, but thats my natural state, Cheers, Larry

i'm hoping he's talking about getting rid of his p.o.s. aa propeller mount on the back of his tcase.

i hate em i hate em i hate em.

you could always see if treeroot has the drawings of his upper mount crossmember to the tranny, but either way, let that tcase hang.

Yes. I still have the round cross member between the frame rails. I put the AA propeller cross member on the Orion because it sounds like lots of folks do that. But a buddy suggested running without it. Can I get away with that? I'd rather avoid some of the issues I've heard about running the AA cross member. I do have a 2F with all 4 mounts and an SM420 with the Orion behind it. :D

What issues are folks having with the AA cross member mount? I have one on my stock tcase, and have no issues. Well, that isn't entirely true, i have no issues now that i drilled out the metric bolts, helicoiled with 3/8 corse thread, and secured with grade 5 bolts with locktight and lock washers....:) Hasn't leaked since.

Just curious.

I am running my gm 350, sm420 without a transfer case cross member. I am using the motor mounts, and a frame attachment at the back of the bell housing to support the running gear. No problems so far but I have decided go with a propeller style cross member in the future to prevent problems. Just for the peace of mind. Mark:beer:

What kind of problems should I watch out for with the propeller?
Thx,
B.

The twist of the motor eventually loosens the bolts in the AA adaptor. I think the poly bushings on those propeller braces don't give enough, like the rubber motor mounts, so the tcase can twist w/ the motor. I'm runnin the SM420/ AA adaptor/ propeller brace on my :pig: & I added the AA support brace under the adaptor - there is a provision for it. You can kinda see part of it right in the middle of the pic. I haven't had any problems w/ the plate style adaptor & propeller brace on my 40.

Great info. I'll now keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the heads-up bro.

Wow...you weren't kidding. I went wheeling this weekend (a little harder than normal) and i took a look and mine loosened up despite the locktight, lockwashers...

Does anyone have any recommendations to fix this? I think i may try to brace the adapter as you did....

Do you have an AA part number for what you used?

in a v8 conversion, you've got the front of the powertrain supported and the very rear supported, so everything inbetween in subject to flex and twisting, which causes bolts to loosen up and leak. i used to have to go through my trans/xfer adapter and retighten every six months before i got rid of the propeller and made a transmission mount.

:bang:That's the same way I set mine up,I wish I knew that before It was all done!I did get some nice rubber dampers to mount it to,was hoping that would allow flex without breakage.I've only got four mounts, two frt,two Rr.
I like that TC stifner plate, and tube protection,Nice!

That is a good idea. Did you mount to the tranny, or the adapter (assuming you are running one) between the tcase and tranny. I have the AA 6" adapter, and i think there are some holes on the bottem that i can use to mount to. Just want to know if they are strong enough or if they will twist and loosen like the propeller.

If you have any (and are ok with it) pictures, could you please post?

You probably don't want more than four mounts anyways otherwise the engine/tranny assembly become structural having to bend in the middle if the frame flexes!!

i've got a 465 with a woody adapter (1"). i made new covers for the two pto ports and mounted off of those, but if you've got an area to bolt to on the adapter, got for that. should be simple. the t-case in a cruiser is made to hang.

I think Poser had a post about using studs rather than bolts to secure the propeller mount. It was working OK last I checked.
TreeRoots custom x-member is the cat's ass, though:beer:

aa uses studs. they have been for quite a while. the propellor loosening up isn't the problem though. it causes the tcase and adapter to loosen up at transmission.
