Do I need front diff oil if 4 wheel drive is never engaged?

Someone got a hold of Poser's log on info. :D

Sell your truck

Put your gloves in your pocket, sit down, close your mouth and open your ears.

You clearly cannot get your head around the idea that the front axle leak could have resulted from the fact that the seals Toyota installed that are to keep gear oil out of the wheel bearings and brakes likely were thirty-plus years old and in dire need of being serviced long before you purchased your thirty-five year old truck. The only thing that is permanent is death. Seals and gaskets are wear items that only last so long.

**** happens. Many owners do not have the first idea about what general maintenance is and what is all entailed in keeping a thirty year old vehicle operating safely on the roads. Just because you spend five, ten, or twenty grand on a thirty year old truck does not mean it is safe and ready to hit the road, and that you are not going to either have to do repairs and maintenance yourself, or pay someone to do it for you. :crybaby:

Feel free to leave the gear oil out of the front end, or run it low for that matter. You will learn the expense involved with removing and rebuilding a front differential. Just think; you will get to use all your new skilz while completely tearing down the front axle assembly to remove the front differential. Hopefully your previous experience with this will save you some time, but you will need to replace most of the seals and gaskets again. :meh:

The owner’s manual for the 40 series states that you are supposed to run the front axle with the lockouts engaged a couple miles every month to ensure that the front axle components remain properly lubricated. Do you have an owner's manual for your Land Cruiser?

If you do not have an owner’s manual, you should pick one up, along with the factory chassis and body manual.

:wrench:

I finally got my answer - thank you Poser. Every couple of months throw it in 4WD and go, splash some of that fluid around.

Good one on the overfill.

Now that my question is answered... I will need to fix the front transfer case bearing (I think) so I don't have vibration and play in the front drive shaft while locked in 4wd. (the real, real reason why I started this thread).

Jesus H fella's take er easy. Isn't someone allowed to ask a ridicules question every now and then haha. He probably bought the knuckle rebuild kit from one of the higher priced places and got robbed. And he might have got a better than great deal on a cruiser he may or may not have deserved, and now he has sticker shock about the parts prices.

Here try this:

Marlin crawler axle seals. They last a bit longer, especially if you are offroad.

Marks Off Road. He sells a cheap rebuild kit.

IH8MUD.COM. Read it. You don't have ask stupid questions if you read the answers to other peoples stupid questions first:hhmm:

Tech FAQ. It has walkthroughs so your next rebuild will be a cinch.

Posting threads. If you must ask a dumb question, then ask as if your friend is doing it and you told him it was dumb:D

All that said, you sure as hell entertained all of us, even Poser replied. And don't bye a jeep. Those things suck

I know. Pull the axle shafts, front drive shaft, third member and lockouts and give them to someone that can use them. Install some drive flanges to keep rubbish out of the wheel bearings.. Install a rear diff cover where the third was and modify the TC shift gate so that it cant go into the 4wd position. Done, a 2wd 40..

Some day soon, you'll run across a Heep or two that you need to rescue. Barbie looks good in her Heep, but it's still a Heep.

I gotta do the same for my 60 transfer. Looking to rebuild this summer. I'm thankful I don't need 4wd at highway speed around here in the meantime cause the vibes are bad:hillbilly:.

Entertainment factor.

I always enjoy entering my questions with a hint of stupidity so I can receive the wrath of fellow FJ40 owners and especially laugh as I read (entertainment factor)..... and at some point actually get an answer (typically the same guys come through after they vent).

The flogging was hyper-thrash-mode on this particular thread (justifyably so) probably because I hit a major stupid-question nerve and probably due to Saturday night alchohol / boredum in front of computer. Needless to say - fluid will go into the diff today, lockers will be engaged for a couple of miles, and ultimately (to my own Ih8mud demise), I will have accomplished my goal - Piss off a few lifers, get a few answers and especially - a few laughs.

You dudes are humor.

Brian of San Diego - thanks for taking the high-road (pun intended) your PM box is full so my response didn't get sent.

The TC doesn't need lube either. :hillbilly:

LOL!

I don't see any Pissed posts in this thread.

As for your's and Butt Ugly Chucks front end vibration in 4x4.

Have you checked the U Joints in the driveshaft as well as the driveshaft flange on the T-Case end and the Diff end (pinion)?

Make sure the large flange nuts did not come loose. The pinion flange nut also sets the crush sleeve and is connected to the backlash of the ring and pinion. Basically you cannot just get under there with a big socket and crank it tight.

Poor choice of words...

DAnimal...you are right...not "pissed off" ... "irritated" is the better word.

As for my drive shaft in the front...I just put fluid in the diff and cruised around...all is well... checked the front shaft for play and here's the deal...

play in the shaft at the spline (I think I have the wrong shaft in this truck), obvious movement coming from the front of the transfer case (cone), but no leaks (thankfully)... leads me to think that perhaps a bearing is worn in the TC... who knows...that's a project for a later date.
