Tonight when I started up my Taco, I heard a strange noise, I attmepted to drive home, and the noise continued. I pulled over to the side of the road and shut the truck off, it was still making the noise. I finally figured out the starter was sticking, but it was only going for about 1 minute, so does this mean I need a new starter, or is there some electrical gremlin at work somewhere else?

It did it to me again today, so I am not driving it again until I pull the starter and get it rebuilt.

Anyone have any luck with OEM brand rebuilt staters? I think this is the route I am going to go.

How am I supposed to get the starter out of there? They seemed to have put the bolts on the bellhousing in places that are very hard to get to. I think I am going to take my truck someplace where they have pulled a few starters on the 5vz.

I belive the motor mount must be loosened, and the engine raised. the bolts on the starter i belive require a 14mm socket I havent pulled one from a taco, only a truck.

That's sort of what it is looking like, and the POS Haynes manual I have doesn't really do a good job with the removal process either. I did get the bolt off the lug for the positive battery cable off, and it was a little corroded, so I cleaned it off, and this actually helped it start faster. There's an auto electric rebuilder here that will fix my starter for about $50, and I'm sure it won't cost more than $150 to have them pull it, since they have all the lifts and other stuff so they can get to it easily.

You might want to remove and have it bench tested or at least ask the person repairing the starter why it does this. It could be that it has a worn out ignition switch.

starter contacts are worn and plunger hangs up between them contacts 30.00 staying with toyota oem parts priceless

Getting the stater out is a mofo. You need a 14mm socket a universal and 10" extension to reach the bolt on top. The lower bolt can be had by a 3" extension and 14mm socket. once it is unbolted you can play tetris by bringing it out above the frame behind the coilover assmbly. It is a tight squeeze and requires a bit if finess but it will come out.

Once it is out you can dissasemble the starter and order a new plunger and contact kit from the dealer. This should resolve it if the bendix gear is still good.

There are several different types of staters you will need to take the contact points and plunger into the dealer to determine which one yo have. The vin doesn't tell you according to my dealer.

The starter was fine all summer long, and never had a problem, until last week. Now the starter runs when ever the battery cable is connected, so everytime I reconnect it, it runs, no key needed... I am going to try and pull it in the next few days...

I just replaced the starter with an OEM brand starter, what a pain to get it in and out, but now that I have got it figured out, i can probally do it all in less than an hour. It starts very nice now, and it's got a lifetime warranty...
