!972 FJ 40 was running smoothly, when it quit.
After pulling dizzy cap, noticed that the shaft is not rotating with engine crank, and I cannot get the dizzy out to find out what the problem is.
Hold-down clamp is completely loose. I can rotate the dizzy around the shaft, just as you would to time the engine, but even after beating on the dizzy case with a BIG hammer and piece of wood, it will not come out.
I am willing to sacrifice the dizzy if you have a helpful suggestion on how to get that mother out.

Removed both bolts, and the clamp. It is completely free. Still cant't get it to budge. We're 100 miles from home and the truck is down hard till we figure out how to get it out.

Can you move it up and down a bit within the hole, or is it fixed up/down and just turning freely?

The drive gear must be loose on the shaft. You may have to get it out from below.

Free left/right, as though you were timing the engine. CAnnot budg up/down to remove.
Oh, wow- what does "remove from the bottom mean? Drop the pan and somehow drive it out? My understanding is that the dizzy spiral gera runs off the camshaft, and that the end of the dizzy shaft fits into the oil pump and drives it. Haynes shows the spiral gear to be pinned to the shaft. If the gear is loose on the shaft you would think that it would be left behind as I try to remove the dizzy.

So, how does "remove it from below" help, and how do I do it?

Thanks for the great thread. If all fails, I'll drop the pan and try to drive out the dizzy from below. Now, how do I find the Perfect Obsession thread you mentioned? I'd love to see how he rigged something to yank the dizzy out.

Dropped the oil pan, which required bottle jack against frame PLUS heat from paint stripper gun. Removed oil pump assembly, drove out dizzy from below, found sheared spiral gear on dizzy. In the processs of removal, fractured the dizzy housing so I need to find a source for used vacuum retard dizzy.
Thanks for all the help, and if you know of a reliable vendor please let me know.

I have an almost new vacuum advance distributor (early type) if you are interested. I also have the ignitor/coil/resistor for semi-electronic ignition in great shape. Does the rig still have full smog gear such that you need a retard distributor?

Where in northern VA do you live? I lived in Fairfax for several years back in the late sixties. Had some good times back then.

Spot-
I live in Fairfax County, in Springfield, but the truck is in Richmond with my son.
I have no smog equipment that I can determine except fot a PCV valve. But, Jim C had a thread which showed that 68-74 dizzy were most always vacuum retard.
I just bought the Pertronix ignitor, and coil. Installed it, engine ran for 20 minutes and just quit, obviously when the pin in the spiral gear sheared.
Because I just invested in the Pertronix, I want a dizzy which takes the 1665 kit, and I'm not expert enough to port the carb myself, or I would jump at the vacuum advance.
Thanks for the offer.

the 1665 kit fits dizzy from like 58-74 i put one in a 63 dizzy that the same as a NON-USA one.

Distributers are available rebuilt at parts stores.
