Good evening all. I am wanting to put in a extended differential breather kit. Has anyone used the stock union that is already installed in the front axle, if so what size hose did you use? Or is it best to order new union(S) for the front and rear? Is is best to use new breathers from Toyota or fuel filters be best?

I always use the stock ones and have used 1/4" id fuel line with a filter on the high end

Sorry, just added it to my reply. 1/4" id line
I second that. I bought an ARB kit had a good look at it, put it on the shelf and grabbed a bulk roll of 1/4” fuel line and used the Toyota parts routed up to the cowl.

Same here as the others. I extended the lines into the engine bay, secured with zip ties, and a 1/4” inline fuel filter on the end.

I have a spool of 1/4 ID fuel hose in my cart on Amazon, clamps and filters. Should be enough to do all 3.

Do your Toyota breathers breath in both directions or are they like my Tacoma ones that have a check valve? In the original location the check valve was critical to keep water out for short water crossings, but if you sit in water long enough they can let water in anyway. After you extend the line to the check valve breathers and leave the check valve on it, it can let air out when getting hot, but when you go through water it doesn't let air back in, so water can get sucked in through the axle seals.

I use fuel filters on the end for the FJ40 extended breathers, and took the rubber flapper out of the check valves on two of the Taco ones and put fuel filters on the other two after I extended them.

The check vale in the breather isn't a real tight shut-off, so it eventually allows air back in. I don't have personal experience with water getting sucked through axle seals before I extended and modified them, but that's the InterWeb's theory.

My 80 and 100s both had check valves. I removed those after extending and added the fuel filters.

we left the check valves on and haven't had any problems on the 80 or the LX450 - but we don't do a whole lot of deep water or long water crossings :meh:

I am doing this as a preventative so my seals don't start to leak due to pressure build up.
