I was trying to adjust the timing on my 78 FJ40 but the distributor is stuck. The retaining bracket on the distributor had two bolts, 1 to the block and 1 that clamps the bracket to the neck of the distributor. I removed both of these and now the bracket spins loosely but the distributor still won't budge. Am I missing somthing??

maybe get a brass hammer and tap it on the bottom upwards to get it loosened up a lil.

edit: or maybe get in there with some channel locks if ya got the room.

Same thing happened to me. We used channel locks, a chain wrench, a BFH, no luck. The disimilar metal between the clamp, block and dizzy locked it in place. We had to drop the pan, remove the oil pump, and drive the distributor out with a drift pin to remove the dizzy. Hope yours doesn't need the same treatment

I think that may be the direction I'm going in. I have tried twisting, tapping, rapping, pounding, heating and even hooked it up to a 2 ton shop hoist with a strap around the neck. No luck. I recheked the timing and it was OK so I finally gave up and put everything back together before I busted somthing.

Meanwhile, I read somthing about a distributor puller. Maybe I can fab somthing up before this turns around and kicks me in butt.

Thanks..

Maybe... just maybe steady soaking with a good penatrating oil, and tapping with a brass drift over the next few months might by you an easier out.

I have found when working on my cruiser, about a week out, I start soaking the bolts that need removal with some PB Blaster or similar stuff and have yet to break off a bolt yet.

Just .02

Great idea! I actually used quite a bit of PB Blaster during the whole ordeal this past weekend (I buy the stuff by the gallon). I will keep dousing it and maybe next time I’ll have better luck.

Greetings. Preparing to remove and service the distributor. I know that the adjustment clamp should be loosened. Does this bolt have to be removed to remove the dissy?

Thank you

No. Dizzy should slide in & out of the clamp, usually.
