We've had dips of close to -60F and never had an issue with the Touareg but this... this really p*ssed me off. By a balmy 2F ABOVE the frickin hatch window disintegrates... NEVER seen that... a couple of days into ownership ... Over 800 bucks for the window with over a week to wait for it... just dispalled

In near 20 years in Alaska and experienced temps below -60 I've NEVER encountered this. A couple of days into ownership and the hatch window disintegrates by a balmy 3F ABOVE.

And the wife goes in for surgery tomorrow... I really didn't need this....

I didn't see anything on inspection but I will say the windshield and front glasses are perennially fogged up. I applied some anti-stuff but didn't do much, a thin film of ice forms inside the window so it seems like there's a leak somewhere letting cold air in.

Really didn't expect this given the pedigree...

Sorry for the bad timing and headache.
The glass was under stress for sure. Not fair to blame the platform for that.
As said a chip, a hit in the past, frame slightly bent in the past, there are many ways glass can be stressed out.
I don't think the fogging and the breakage are related.
However fogging is either caused by AC not working (yes, AC is used in the winter for this particular reason) or you have water intrusion that you must address ASAP before electrical issues start. Plenty of threads about that.

Again, sorry for the bad timing. Whish your wife a successful surgery and fast healing!

See the above thread re: fogging. Odds are the HVAC recirculation door flap is broken.

If so, part to fix is here:

Thanks John, I'll have a look at the recirculation door inside the glove box when I have a moment. As to the glass poopoo happens I just thought I'd catch a break after the past year. Oh well... thanks for your thoughts and comments.

I had a 2006 4Runner that I bought used in South Texas (where the defrost was likely never used) and brought it home. The first time that the rear defrost was used and then the car was parked and the glass allowed to cool back down - the rear glass disintegrated. Turned out to be a know issue with 4Runner rear glass from that range of years. Replaced with Toyota glass and never had another issue.

Well the local Toyota dealership said the glass was readily available (not here but in the Lower 48s) so it must be an item in demand.

Hope wife’s surgery goes ok

Thank you! Yes, it was a scene out of The Pitt but we have an excellent surgical team at Fairbanks Memorial and so now the recovery begins...

Was rear defrost on?

Several reports of Toyota glass exploding: both rear and sunroof on several different vehicle lines.
Years ago I was sitting at a red light in a 2011 Sienna and heard a loud crack. My back glass exploded. Nothing hit it, I was sitting at a red light, only car 11AM nice Spring day. No reason, just boom. Insurance replaced it, had the car for another couple of years before I traded it in for my LX and never had another issue with the back glass. Glass shop told me it happens all the time with sunroofs and back glass. "Tempered glass is temperamental" is what the guy said.

FYI This can sometimes be caused by a hot spot on the rear defroster.

It was 5 ABOVE... a summer day here...
