Hello,

I need to replace the front pads on my 2005 LX470 and I want to stay OEM. I have new OEM rotors, but I need to get pads and I see there are two different options:

04465-60230 Sumitomo $115.02 MSRP
04465-60220 NBK $104.50 MSRP

Why are there two, nearly identical parts available? Is there a specific one I should be using?

Last question... Are the OEM Anti-squeal Shim, Pad Retainers, and Pad Clips reusable?

FF and FG... now I'm going to go research why one is better than the other ;)

To close this out, I was previously searching for the parts using just the 2005 LX470 and it showed both... When I search by my cars VIN, it only showed the Sumitomo version for my vehicle.

From AI:

FF pads show similar friction at both cold and hot temperatures, making them suitable for daily driving and consistent performance, while FG pads have a higher friction coefficient, especially at high temperatures, offering superior stopping power for performance driving or racing but may fade at lower temperatures.

Understanding the Code
  • First Letter:
Represents the friction coefficient at low temperatures (around 200–400° F).

  • Second Letter:
Represents the friction coefficient at high temperatures (around 300–650° F).

  • Higher Letters = Higher Friction:
The further the letter is in the alphabet (e.g., F > E, G > F), the higher the friction coefficient and stopping power.
FF Pads
  • Characteristics: Excellent and consistent friction across a wide temperature range.

  • Ideal Use: Daily drivers and street vehicles, providing reliable and predictable braking.

  • Performance: Balances good cold-temperature effectiveness with good hot-temperature effectiveness.
FG Pads
  • Characteristics: High friction at higher temperatures, indicating strong stopping power under demanding conditions.

  • Ideal Use: Performance-focused vehicles, track days, or heavy-duty applications.

  • Performance: Offers superior initial braking effect and stopping power in aggressive driving, but the higher friction coefficient might come at the cost of rotor wear or increased noise compared to FF pads.
Which to Choose?
  • For Normal Driving:
Choose FF pads for their reliable and consistent performance in a wide range of temperatures.

  • For Performance Driving:
Choose FG pads for their increased stopping power and ability to handle the heat of aggressive driving or track use.

Get the brake pad that has toyota printed on it.

I swapped Toyota pads with akebono pads and the difference is night day, I’ll stick with akebono. Pedal effort is much less.

Toyota designates the following years and pads. They might be physically interchangeable but the pistons in the calipers are indeed different.

03-07 04465-60230 Sumitomo $115.02 MSRP
98-02 04465-60220 NBK $104.50 MSRP

So I was a victim of Toyota's crappy online parts search. I entered 2005 so it should have excluded the earlier ones.

I'm guessing each dealer/group runs their own website(s). Which site did you use?
