I bought a LJ78 a few months back, It has Diff lock switch as shown below

The wiring beside switch was disconnected by pr owner. I connected the wires & then switched on the Diff Lock , there was a click in Diff ECU which is beside glove aptt, the Diff Lock LED started blinking in console, the rear wheels diff locked & i could feel it when crawling, it was doing so when in H4 & L4 mode only.
Next I Jacked up the rear wheels & while neutral & in H4, L4 I again switched on the switch & manually rotated the wheels they were locked together.
My question is
Is it OK if the LED is blinking, as mechanically I feel the Diff Lock system is working.

check the sensor at the rear diff, it might have a broken wire or is unplugged which won't allow the reading to the board...

im curious - did the lj come with rear locker only as an option?

i would think it would be both front and rear locked or both open, but not locked rear and open front

is that a 100 series (locked rear / open IFS) difflock switch transplanted in?

Dear Colleague
Thanks for yr valuable advise.
Checked the sensor wiring, the terminal below fuel tank was broken, replaced it but wire was also open in b/w, had to replace the loop from sensor terminal to second terminal also.
Checked system now light is steady when Diff Lock is engaged.
Really appreciate the help.

Just curious: What year model LJ78 do you have and was the Diff Lock option only offered in certain years? Thanks...............1978HJ45

They were a factory installed option. Some have 'em, some don't.

Oh well.......I guess I don't need it to haul the kids to school anyway.
Thanks........1978HJ45 ( 1990 LJ78 )

hi i have a lj 78 with rear difflock . does the difflock red light has to blink when on or be steady,
second has the h4 button and the hublock has to be on while engaging the difflock

Different years seem to have a different requirement for gear selection: generally you have to be in Low 4WD for the diff lock to engage. Some vintages will engage while in 4WD high range.

A steady light means the locker is engaged. A flashing light means it has not engaged - ie: the teeth might not have lined up yet, there is a fault with the system, or you are not in 4WD and (usually) also Low range.

hi john thanks mine is a 91 lj78, will try in low 4wd , does the cruiser have some kind of 4x4 controller i f yes where is it located , in the glove box i found the efi bolted on top. there are other two black boxex dont know what are those for

LJ78
put in low range
lock front hubs
turn knob

red light shoudl be flashing (99% of the time)
drive ahead or back and once engaged the light will stay red.

if it keeps flashing then check for power at the locker end, if you have power at the lead then make sure all the pigtails are firmly seated in the lead on both sides of the connection.

if power all the way then remove motor and test.
