I noticed today when i got home some diff fluid around the breather valve on the rear diff.. anybody know what causes diff fluid to leak out the breather? I have a 89 fj62 btw help please !!

Overfilled diff?

im going to check tommorow.. i just thought i would post this to get some ideas.. i dont believe its overfilled.. i do know one of the axle seals is slightly leaking

Only time I've seen it was after romping through a river (when I had a Tacoma). Water was deep enough to get in through my breathers (thereafter fixed), basically causing the overfill.

Might not be your problem, but the only thing I could think it to be was too much fluid of some kind. If it's water, get it out soon.

after getting stuck in the middle of the aqua fria river a few weeks ago at AZROCKS 2010 been having a few issues lately. aside from the fact that i just put a new MAF Mojave 4+ lift on her. mind with the amount of flex that this suspension produces we noteced after a inspection underneath that the breather valve hose on the rear diff poped out more than like not well before we crossed the river. and being that i sitting in the river for quite some time before being pulled out i have a bad feeling that water just sucked right on in. mind i didnt pay any attention to it until two weeks later when i noticed oiliy fluid dripping on my drive way ...took a peek and sure as s*** its been squirting out the top of the breather valve. so obvously i have to get it out. but not sure how?
i just had them put new seals on front and back .and teh front had all the knuckles replaced. so do i just open the drain plug and drain it out then fill it back up. or do i need to pull teh whole damn thing apart to make sure there is no moister or water or anything else in there? and yet afetr perving on here im allready looking to put extended breathershoses on as well
Any info would be helpfull?

yep, drain it at the bottom screw, have A good look at whats in there, hopefully just oil...
then fill it back up at the filler plug .only fill it back up level with the bottom of that hole,

but if there was water in there, i dont know enough to help you there... good luck mate

A drain and fill should fix you right up. I never noticed any problems in my rear diff when I got water in them, as long as it wasn't in there for long periods of time. If it's only been two weeks, you should still be in the clear.

You'll know if it caused problems--you'll get leakage elsewhere.

only time ive ever had crap come out of my breather was when the breather line came off and after playing in a bunch of water multiple times it filled with water.

you do the same thing if water is in there.

Wasn't mentioned that the OP has one, but a leaking ARB can do that too.
