I don't know of any Toyota diesels that will bolt up to the 3 speed so you may want to consider a 4 speed swap as well. It IS possible to modifiy a gasser 4 speed/single peice transfer case to fit the 3B (I've done it for the FJ55).
You WILL be doing some wiring changes as well cause you don't have a coil/distributor on a diesel nor do you have a source for vacuum assist for the brakes. Toyota diesels use a vacuum pump built onto the rear of the altenator.

You will then need a 2H. The 3B needs it's own transmission and motor mounts. I believe the 2H even shares the motor mounts with the [123]F blocks and mates to the same transmissions. Problem is they're hard to find. I did find one in CA but they wanted $4k for it, so went 3F-E instead. Ensure you get the alternator as it has the pump in it for your brakes.

Yep wiring changes will be needed, but they are no matter what swaps in.

Is it possible to use a seperate belt driven vacuum pump? Ford diesels have one that I think would be an easy add-on. If you can swap a diesel you can surely fab a bracket for a vaccum pump. Then you get away from the $$$$ factory alt combo and can run whatever brand alternator you want. The vac pump on my '84 F-250 6.9L is the size of the 2f smog pump, I think this should be the least of your worries in considering an engine swap. I also heard the Luke Porter at www.4x4labs.com is considering a Mercedes diesel swap kit.

Any Toyota diesel or any diesel for that matter are pricey. Don't expect to find a good running diesel for $1000 or 2! I'd find a rusted 'Cruiser from eastern Canada and use the guts from that.

The 2H, in my opinion, is not up to the same standards as the mighty 3B. The power and fuel economy is no better than the 3B from what I've heard. It just makes some people feel better when they have a 6 cylinder rather than a 4 cylinder.
On top of all that, the 3B is more suited to a turbo than the 2H.

As for pricey altenators, I've never needed to replace the altenator on a 3B yet and I've put on 400,000kM's. I've done the brushes and the regulator but not the altenator.

Agreed the 3B is a superior engine to the 2H, but I don't know anyone with an HJ40 :) and it would be more of a drop in and no need to modify the tranny hump and other body areas.

To get a good idea of the price differences (not as absolute prices, but rather % changes):

It would be damn near impossible to find and part, but the 1PZ would be a sweet 40 engine. Hmmm, a PZJ40. Got no idea to what trannies the 1PZ mates.

I was in the same boat as you. I was thinking yeah I want to stay Toyota and I want a diesel. But I guess a lot of people want that because it is a lot more expensive than some of the other popular swaps. I would be saving up for years to afford that swap.
