I realise the very title indicates that maybe this thread should be in the diesel section, and maybe will end up there, but as part of my question doesn't involve diesel, I'll let the pro's decide.
OK, First off, I have an 81 BJ60 with 458k on it. Quite a few receipts for the standard toyota to have over 25 year life etc...
I am completely gutting the vehicle and gonna refab the entire body from the rear doors back. Inside first built on what is/was left of the stock rusted body. Then once inner tub is solid and in place replacing everything around it and out with new steel. Can anyone give me a good reason not to do this, or at least why not to do it this way?
Secondly, Did 60 rear leafs come from the factory with friction pads between leafs? I don't have any indication that any of the PO's replaced springs and they look beefy, but rusty and flat. If they are stock, will doing the cheap AAL mod be enough to give them new life, vs re-arcing or other crazy ideas. Yes I do know that a nice new suspension system is the way to go, but I got a lot of work to do and less and less $$$ to do it with. Also can anyone tell me if the AAL mod still works fine with a shacle reversal up front? I don't see why it wouldn't, but who knows. AND, does anyone know the best length for the aforementioned leaf?
OK, the diesel portion. Now please believe me people, I have looked before asking. Obviously gonna turbo the 3B ASAP, but, does anyone have a nice little chart maybe and/or a checklist of all the parts needed for said upgrade, and what other vehicles those parts might be found on. i.e turbos, manifolds etc... Manifolds, ok, that just reminded me of another question I can't seem to find an answer for. Without a turbo setup, can I run some form of header and straight pipe setup on a 3B? That exhaust is bloody long and manages to route past both frame rails as it meanders towards the back of the truck!!! I haven't seen anyone who makes a header for sale for the 3B, is it because the power gains wouldnt really matter? I read so much in 4by mags these days about increasing diesel power as easily as letting the engine breath better but everything seems to be for newer bigger diesels. Just wondering if same priciples apply to my wee3B.
Lastly, I've read a few things here about the toyota ct20 topping out too quickly. I'll admit I don't know a whole lot about it, but does this sort of thing matter in a diesel vs. gas engine? Do many LC owners turbo their FJ's?
OK, sorry, I know I should have probably sent in 2 or 3 different questions but when I started at 6 this morning I thought it would be a quick one. Besides, I like reading the long letters on these forums anyway so I dont have to keep flipping around.
Thanks all for any input you decide to send this way
