Hello everybody,
I'm wanting to buy a later-model Land Cruiser (at least 80 series) and a diesel engine to go with it. Problem is, I'm in the US, so
I have to buy the vehicle and engine separately. Thus, two questions:

1) Is there an optimum combination you recommend?
2) Is there an engine supplier you'd recommend? (I've recently found
this site: http://gscruiserparts.com/Inventory Engines.html)

Thanks,

Christian Bbergersworth-wins@yahoo.com

Hello and welcome!

The impression I have is that the diesel swaps are discussed periodically but nothing much is happening. Main reason probably is that it would be ungodly expensive to have it done, and probably nightmarish to do it yourself. Do a search and you'll find already some info. For the 80, try the 80 forum of course.
Good luck and let us know if you find something great! More will chime in for sure.

I think the reason this has been discussed but not really done much is no one has worn out a 4.7L to where it needs replaced.

I think the Chevy 6.2/6.5L are the most popular diesels for a swap because of their low cost and availability. Lots of aftermarket support. But I haven't seen one in a 100 yet.

As for Toyota engines, I'd avoid the earlier 80-series 1HD-T and go w/ the later 1HD-FT ('96-97 ish) or better, the 1HD-FTE (current HDJ100 engine). The 1HD-T had problems w/ big-end bearing failures on Oz models. I think that's the reason for the later 80's having the updated TD engine. If you're going to bother to spend the $$$ on a swap, you might as well try to source the new 4.5L V8 twin turbo diesel. There's a new LC70 4-door hardtop mid wheelbase available for '08 (obviously not in N.A.) w/ the twin turbo and OEM snorkel. Previously, at least in Oz, I think you could only get the 70 series mid-wheelbase in the 2-door troopy version w/ FRP top.

Lets try to change this by signing this petition. You never know we might be able to make a differance.

Wow, be prepared to spend some big bucks, and in the end it may not be worth it. Here in Australia a 1HDT (90-95) costs about $9000au, a 1HD FT (95-97) would cost up to $12000 if you can find one and a 1HD FTE - forget it.
and this is in Australia where diesels are common. Most guys over here are converting their cruisers to the chev V8 turbo diesels. I think a chev conversion over here costs about $18000 including rebuilt engine and diff ratio change.

can you elaborate on why they go with the Chevy?

I think they go with the Chev because of price, availability (they import them from the U.S by the container load) power, and availabilty of spares. check the Brunswick Diesel conversion site. They do a lot here in Western Australia.

That's not entirely true Brett. I just bought a 40k old (25,000 mi for you mericano's) 1HD-FTE plus H151 5speed box (the big one) and the complete wiring harness and brain out of a wrecked 79 series ute. The whole shebang cost me AU$11k.

The engine is currently being put into my 99 mod 105 cruiser. Because the 105 had a 1fz (I got it cheap) I'm expecting the job to run into 5 or 6 grand to convert. Mechanically it's not very difficult because the engine and box fit straight in with just a little loving needed to get the shifter in the right spot.

The harder part is the wiring. Essentially you need to take both harnesses, cut away what you don't need from each and lay them in together. Big job:doh: but not impossible.

If the car had been a 1hz then there would be a few less things to do but not that many. Anyway, I jagged it so cheap a few extra clams on fuel lines, filter/primers etc isn't a big issue.

The chevy thing comes from the fact that that most folks can handle the idea of mechanical cut and shut but shy away from the lekky stuff. The chev V8's take a bit of coaxing to get in with re welding mounts and custom adapters but add fuel and power to the pump and bobs your uncle.

Brunwick and Linquip both quoted around $20k for the 6.2ltr NA and $28k for the 6.5 TD drive in drive out 3 weeks later (engine only). The way I'm doing it I keep my Toyota integrity in the motor coupled to the right gearbox box and diff ratios. I think you will find the Chevy's rev to high with standard gears so there is some more money you need to spend. My mail is that they can also suffer from cooling issues.

Getting back to the original question, converting isn't hard but having now read through these pages and found out just how much stuff is not available in the biggest market in the world I'd have to say your nemisis won't be the converstion but the aquisition.

Find out if you can put an Aussie TD in you truck and I'd be glad to source and freight (at you cost of course :D) a real motor over to you. Just bear in mind, she'll be a right hand drive one ;)

I guess you got lucky with the 1HD FTE for that money, my mate just put a 200000k 1HDT in his 80 series and it cost him just over 9k. My point was that it is an expensive operation here in Australia where diesels are common, god only knows what it would cost to source one in the U.S. A few of my mates have v8 petrol 100s and I wouldnt swap my TD 100s for quids. Although that might change when the 200s TD V8s are finally released here. cheers Brett

Not luck, you can get them for between 10 and 14 depending on k's and damage all day long, provided someone has stacked a ute :whoops: and that's with the gearbox and sundries.

Your mate shoulda put one in his 80 ;). I considered it till I came across this 105.

considering the alternative I don't think it is expensive. It costs money, but it's not expensive.

but, as you say, in the States it looks like a different story.
