Well, I found a nice affordable diesel compression tester, but they only have adpaters for the 1.8 and 2.2 glow plugs. 10x1.25 pitch.
Question, will either of these allow me to use on a 2H, with the 4.0 liter diesel?

Thanks,
Alex

Sorry alex, I don't know the answer to your question. but this is what I did. The tester I bought only had a plug that fit in the injecter hole. As this is a major PITA I have taken an old glow plug and cut the top and bottom off and drilled a hole down the center. I then tapped a brass pipe to accept the threads on the glow plug and the threads on a smaller plug that came with the kit. It works great.

Where are you guys getting a gauge that can handle 480 psi? Big-rig shop? Cummins/CAT? Parts store???

My brother has a compression gauge for gassers, but it pins out somewhere around 200psi. I don't even want to know what a Toyota compression gauge SST costs...

i bought one at Napa and it had to have the proper adapter bought separately but it works fine.
i also bought a snap on, big money but now if i have a bad engine i test using both and compare the readings. i would hate to recommend a rebuild and find out later that the tester was wonky...(yes, i have heard of such a thing happening right here in Alberta)
as for your question whether they are interchangeable? can't answer that one... :(

I have a gasoline engine compression tester, and no you can't use them on diesels because of the higher pressure.

The one I bought from www.tooldesk.com was less than fifty, and the adapter another 8.00. The kit VTcruiser posted is the same tool. but with all the adapters. I did not need them all. So I just went with what I needed, and it was just over 55.00

Not bad, and I will trust it only as far as the readings are equal between cylinders. I would not trust it to give me precise readings.

I am just hoping that the glow plugs on all toyotas are a 10x1.25 pitch..

Does the 1HZ engine use the 10x1.25 glow plug adapter?

Thanks

thanks Wayne, VTCruiser, and adasilva,

I like the price of the tooldesk unit, though one must be wary of inexpensive tools standing up to premium ones for critical 'rebuild/no rebuild' measurements as Wayne stated. Has anyone bought one at a Vancouver store (so I can go look in person)?

Thanks again,
Steve

Steve,
If you're in Vancouver, B.C. I picked up my diesel compression tester from Lordco parts. They are quite different from the gasser compression testers in that you don't hold them in the hole, you bolt them in (a requirement for 400psi compression)!!
PM me if you'd like to drop by and borrow my gauge. They are around $100 otherwise.
