Diesel 88FJ62 W/13B-T, Auto Trans and A/C

This is a conversion that I was planning to keep for my own use as a camping/exploration cruiser, but I have other projects including an FJ55 diesel project that I plan to keep for this purpose.

The FJ62 has a salvage title. When I got it the engine was blown and the w/s was broken but there was no other current damage and it does not appear that it ever had any real major damage in the past. The frame is straight etc and it drives straight. Cosmetically the exterior is not great but since it was supposed to be a camping rig I didnt care that much. It has been repainted at some point and has some minor body work that could be done better. The paint is not great. There is no rust anywhere.

The 13B-T engine is a JDM import with unknown miles, but I was told it had around 60K. It runs really well with an automatic trans and A/C. The windshield has been replaced. The interior is in good shape and everything works. The odo showed 145K miles. There is not currently a radio in it. Its basically stock with 31" tires. Currently has a pyrometer and boost guage. Passed local emissions and is registered.

I have to do some final finishing before it goes, but thought I would list it now. I should be done with remaining items in the next week or two.

$8000 Firm. Located in Portland.

Thanks for looking. I can email more pics if interested.

Would love to know if you got the diesel title sorted. Im in socal, but am very interested in this rig, if I can be relatively assured I can register it with no hassles in cali.

Does anyone else on the thread know any of the trials of this kind of reg?

Thanks!

I havent looked into it much becuase I havent had any serious interest from Cali. Just a few posts in this thread but no one calling me or asking for more info.

The title here says nothing about fuel type. Ill call DMV tomorrow to see what info they store thats not on the paper.

I am trying to get people here interested, hence my previous questions. I would not be worried to register it in Cali if there was official documentation as a diesel from another state, it has been done often. if one runs a carfax, what does it come up with this vin? no idea whether carfax shows fuel type though.
cheers,
J

a diesel swapped 60 or 80 would sell much faster if it were titled diesel, seems like plenty of interest from Cali to make it worth while.

Oregon Title does not reference fuel type. Oregon registration does. See registration below. The interesting point might be the VIN number is still JT3FJ - not HJ, or HZ, or whatever.

I looked into California title for this vehicle and did not see any road blocks other than a smog check. I did not title it in CA though - I moved back to Oregon instead. Bob

Unless Im mistaken California doesnt require smog check on diesels over 6 years old as long as its titled diesel, the snag runs in when the title hasnt changed and you have to do it Ca and your bar ref knows your motor isnt DOT/EPA approved.

bring it up here to wa. I've taken a truck with a cali title, replaced the engine with a diesel, titled it here in wa and sold it to another guy in cali. he had zero problems. so. bringn it up. we'll have the paperwork in a couple weeks.

This is a nice truck. Real clean conversion. Chris was kind enough to let me check it out and distract him with idle cruiser chat as he finished up a couple details on it a while back. He even let me drive it, and it drove great!

It is theoretically possible that you could roll into the DMV with the OR title and reg, state it was diesel-powered and get them to issue you a CA diesel title for it. It would depend on which DMV, which person in the DMV, etc.

I got a title for a motorcycle recently with a bill-of-sale and a VIN check at the local PD. The police cadet who did the VIN check for me would have just checked the box for "diesel" if I brought him this rig, I'm pretty sure. I don't think he ran the VIN for the motorcycle through the computer or anything.

I wouldn't bet $10000 on either of these scenarios though.

I did a conversion recently for someone in Norcal. The cruiser was titled in FL - converted here and driven to CA and titled with no issues.

FWIW, I called the CA DMV re:dropping a diesel into an originally gas-powered vehicle as I am getting ready to put a 6BT in an FJ80. Their comment was that there is nothing preventing it from being legal. Just need to get it examined by an officer (for VIN corroboration,) pay the $2 title change fee and submit the paperwork. CA does not require diesel vehicles to be smogged (at least that's what it says on the DMV website.)

Bump for the 13B-T powered 62, If it is that tough to sell it soak it down with rust check replace the fluids (if not already done). I know it is hard to sell things now so I would wait till things pick up. I would love to own that one. I have had to put things on hold too . but please dont trade it for a gasser 80 there are millions of them around and it would never equal the blood sweat and bears put into the 62.

Yeah the 13B-T works pretty well in the 62. A friend of mine has been using this as his daily driver while I install a 1HZ in his. He put 33" tires on it which is fine around town but a bit too much in the hills.

The only reason I would trade it for an 80 is so I could convert the 80 to 1HZ or 1HD.
