When I come to a stop, she dies. It only seams to happen at full operating temp. If I turn it off for 15 min or so, and start her up again, she runs fine untill reaching full oerating temp. She will die when coming to a stop or just pushing in the clutch running down the road. Also, every once in a while she'll miss and almost backfire.

It's desmogged according to the tech links here on mud about 3 years ago. At that time I did the following:

- Carb rebuild/dizzy recurve by Jim C
- All new vacuum lines
- New oem manifold gasket
- header

Recently I did a tune up, new plugs (gapped), new wires, new cap/rotor, set timing to 7* BTDC. I don't think I have an vacuum leak, sprayed wd-40 all over the place: vauum lines, arount manifold, around carb etc. I'm going to get a vacuum gauge to double check though. Is there anything else? I'm at a loss.

when it dies, is there gas in the carb?

Good question, I don't know. How would I check? Fuel window?

Check fuel filter, make sure you have the supply and return lines hooked up as such, I have seen them reversed. Check for any trace of gasoline under the fuel pump. As they start to die, the fuel will start to come out the weep hole in the bottom. Make sure your gas cap is not holding a vacuume in the tank, I have seen that too.

Just a longshot here, but are either of the BVSVs near the thermostat housing broken or missing vacuum lines?

Yes, BVSV (2) pink has nothing plugged into it. That's cause of the desmog though.

Ok, I was leaning more toward vacuum going through one side and an open port on the other. Since you're desmogged, you pink one should be a non-issue. What about the blue one? Is it cracked possibly? They get old and brittle and are prone to cracking.

Looks good AFAICT.

I might have a dead cylinder. I pulled all the plug wires one at a time and the only one that didn't change (rpm drop) was #5. Although some of the cylinders were more dramatic than others ie some almost made the engine die and other only dropped slightly.

a single dead cylinder will not make the motor die at operating temps..

Hmm... I might have to take it to Mark W. He knows a little about cruisers. :)

Is this normal

No. Is/was your air filter oily? Try searching for PCV; blow by; oily air filter. You might find some related info.

HTH-

Is the air filter is oily/carbony (word?)

when was the last time you did a compression check?

~4 years ago. Don't remember the numbers, but they were good.

A vacuum gauge and compression tester are in the mail.
