Did y'all see this? I think it's in your neck of the woods

I don't think that that is standard USFS procedure...

Private land adjacent to US Forest maybe?

I would like to get more details - we just got an alert in the Carolina Trailblazers that some private land we have been riding in for years is about to be closed due to some damage?

Anybody have any more info on this. I'll be pissed if I don't get to go out there ever now.

(don't make wookie angry)

How can you damage land? They dig up thousands of squrae feet to put homes in, hundreds of thousands of miles for some goddy powerlines, Fence lines, Barns, eroded banks and polluted water from cattle, sewer lines. And they give a crap about two ruts in the land that would grow back over within a couple years if nobody used it.

How much erosion did that tractor cause just getting there.

Hunters and fishers kill the things we go out there to look at again we get crap. Not to mention endanger those who are out enjoying the land (YES I have been shot at) and I know those who have actually been killed and I don't even go out that much.

This is sickening. Blue ribbon coalition and SEMA fight like girls. Save their damn money in low budget play by the rules lawers and buy some land then charge us to use it. Probably cheaper than the taxes we pay and then on top of it have to pay the francis franks of the world just to tell us we can't use their land when we get there....ohh no the tents are going to dent the grass...whats the point. :censor:

Well that sucks. That's one of my favorite places to go. Not for the wheeling, obviously, but for the scenery and some camping fun. I bet they closed one of the loops where there was a rut as deep as my hood. Did they close the road up to the second bald as well? Wow....first Tellico and now this. Soon, there will be nothing left to actually use 4wd on.

I encourage everyone to buy a season pass to Uwharrie and Brown Mountain, even if you don't plan on going. Consider it your donation to keep the last two state ORV sites open, and make our numbers add up...

Y'all...keep an eye on that thread. It's moving toward the creation of a group to work with the FS in that area and you guys should be a big part of it since it's in your area.

good to hear it got back on track... it looked for a little bit like it was leading to a Wrestlemania Event..

No way I was gonna let that happen. Too important for stupid crap.

All of these closures are definitely frustrating - I emailed Terry Seyden - FS public affairs officer, asking for explanation of closure plus how we can help...and received this response regarding Tellico/Caney Fork etc:

With Tellico we are dealing with a difficult situation with trail system initially located years ago along side the Tellico river and it's tributaries. The other designated OHV trail systems on the Forest are on better locations and we certainly welcome volunteer group help on these trails to make sure we maintain them to standard. Wayehutta OHV Trail system on the Nantahala District, Brown Mountain OHV trail system on the grandfather District, Badin Lake on uwharrie and Black Swamp OHV system on Croatan all remain open and we welcome help on maintaining these.

The Caney Fork situation is different since that area was never designated as an OHV system and Forest system roads and non system old woods roads were simply historically used without agency planning or oversite. Current regs are that unlicensed atvs cannot be used on public open forest roads but can only be used on specifically designated routes which were identified in our 1994 Forest Plan.

Hope this helps. You can check with the individual district rangers for each of the designated OHV areas. You could also talk with our dispersed recreation/ trails coordinator Steve Hendricks.

Seems many of the issues @ Caney are due to ATVs...the other OHV areas listed (Wayehutta & Black Swamp) are ATV use only (sub 50" wheelbase).

Steve Hendricks can be found at: shendricks@fs.fed.us
He was copied on the response, I plan on contacting him and pushing for more 4x4 areas, this could start with opening up the existing OHV trails to larger vehicles.

Interesting info, I'm gonna copy and paste this over to our board as well. Just trying to keep the info in a single location. thx and good work

Not to throw too many blows but I think ATV's and the motorcycles are a huge part of the problem and I really dont see them caring or making much effort on the whole issue. The drive off trails, you rarely see them adopting trails and that in and of itself is extremely disheartening. They have so many options vs what we have and if one closes they just move on...

frankly I see this a potential opportunity not a blow. I think we all assumed the closures are primarily due to 4WD trucks, at least that was/is my assumption. Now I'm certainly not discounting that we're potentially part of the problem but if the ATV traffic is truly behind the actions perhaps it's time to make a concerted effort to get them involved. I have to believe there is a someone in the ATV community that is aware and willing to coordinate with us.

Not knowing much about the ATV crowds and how potentially, at least in NC, they seem to be a more rural demographic crowd lets get a grasp of where we can start. Something that might be worth while is to monitor this and speak with those traveling the trails. This could start at Uwharrie since we know there is a strong crowd there. For the right reasons, word of mouth travels quickly.

Agreed and valid points on the demographics. Let's not (as a group) assume this means they are not conscientious and unwilling to get involved. I know you aren't suggesting this, I just don't want others to think we're lump summing them any more than we "Offroaders" are also "Redneck Hillbillies" to those who don't know better.

I've learned many times over it's not "what you know" but "who you know" that gets things done. I think a good place to open the dialogue is from someone here that knows someone over there, the 6 rules of separation type thing so, yes, word of mouth is part of it.

anyway, as there is already a very healthy thread going on the Ga. page about all of this it might be good to keep this under one location. Again, just a thought.

Thanks guys, I'm looking forward to this getting done.

Probably a good place to start is at the local ATV stores. I know there are a couple large ones here in Charlotte as well as a few in Raleigh. Maybe some flyers and some awareness starts there....

I will check out the GA cruisers thread now too. THanks for the heads up....
