Did I make a big mistake? New owner of an LX470.

I called the Toyota dealership where I bought the vehicle and they said to bring it back so they can look at it. According to my contract, I have until tomorrow at 9 pm to cancel the deal.

I'm trying to decide if I should take it to the Lexus dealer instead to have them look at it. I understand that this will be money out of pocket, but I know I would get an honest assessment. I'm afraid there is a possibility that The Toyota dealer would do a bandaid fix for now to buy time until the cancellation period has expired.

Should I let Toyota where I bought it look at it? Or take it to Lexus today?

I wouldn't get too caught up in canceling the deal - once you have this issue sorted out, you'll have a like new LX that will give you years of smiles. Bring it back to the Toyota dealer and have them fix what's wrong on their dime.

I ended up taking it to Lexus for an independent evaluation for peace of mind. They will run diagnostics today to see what is causing the trouble code and symptoms described previously. The Toyota dealer said they would repair the vehicle after Lexus diagnoses the problem. If Lexus determines that the transmission needs to be replaced or something major, I'll be taking it back to the Toyota dealer for a refund.

I just heard back from Lexus, and they said it needs a new transmission. They can try replacing the solenoid, but in their experience that will only buy some time before the transmission fails.

I have three options:
1. Pay for a reconditioned Lexus transmission for $4,700. May be some wiggle room on that price. Includes a warranty.
2. See if Toyota will refund some of the purchase price to put towards the new transmission.
3. Take it back and get a refund.

If I had the option to walk away, I would. Bad tranny on a 50k car does not bode well going forward.
Yes, I'm leaning that direction. It's one thing if I had a few trouble free years with this vehicle, but for this to happen within 10 minutes of ownership does not sit well. I plan to return it tomorrow.

That's amazing that it would need a new tranny at 50K. Could it be the same commonly known tranny problem linked to the '04-'05 ??

Sounds like you got the lucky break of the century. Take it back and keep looking. Low miles is great on these rigs, but good service history and maintenance trumps low miles any day, in my book.

I never had a shudder when driving, just a 4-5 second lag before shifting down to first after a complete stop. Then a thud when the gear engaged. It was very easy to replicate consistently. I was able to show the service tech within 30 seconds of a test drive. The weird thing is it drove perfectly on the freeway, or even accelerating from a stop. no shudder, slippage, grinding, etc. I wonder if replacing the solenoid would fix the problem, or if the Lexus service guy is right about this being a sign of an inevitable tranny failure down the road.

It would be interesting to see if the Lexus diagnosis shows up for that VIN on the Lexus owners site to warn future prospective buyers. Assuming you walk away.

Will the Toyota dealer replace the tranny?

I was wondering the same thing. I'll see what they say tomorrow when I bring it back for a refund. If they replace it with an OEM reconditioned transmission with warranty, I would consider keeping the vehicle.

Rather far fetch but....Could it possibly be low on fluid, the shifting of the fluid causing the lag in shifts......then the dealer trying to sell a tranny ??

Toyota said they would pay for the repairs. Whatever Lexus says it needs, the Toyota dealership will pay for it or did you not get that in writing / recorded? How is that you're pout anything? I will GUARANTEE that the dealership knew about this issue when they sold it, but were hoping it wouldn't rear its ugly head until it was out of their warranty. They need to pay for it. Period. That's why they include a warranty. It's a calculated risk for them.

Hopefully you got a smoking deal on it because otherwise, the NEXT guy will either get a smoking deal or get screwed.

Is the Toyota dealership a franchise, most are in the UK. They will let you drive away with a fault as this allows the dealership to claim for the repair from the warranty. So I would say they will put a recon transmission in as it won't cost the dealership anything, the dealership still claims for the repair from Toyota's extended warranty. The repair doesn't cost Toyota nowhere near what they charge the general public as it will probably be a exchange transmission, this keeps the dealership labour claim to a minimum and is a more controlled repair, a factory repair will have less risk than a local dealership mechanic having a go at it.

A new/recon transmission would be a positive, not a negative on this purchase, So I would try a get the repair done. Just don't accept a solenoid change though, as this would be a bit of a risk..
