Whilst replacing the exhaust manifold gasket I peered inside the head and discovered this:

1) Is this a crack in the valve stem seal?
2) Pitting sign of ?
3) Knurl from bumping in to damaged seal?
4) Oil getting burned after exiting 1?
No. 1 and No. 5 very similar

And the below pic isn't great, but that's what 4 of the exhaust valves look like (normal)

The 1HDT motor has about 120 kms on it. I imported it and have been doing some PM, cleaning it up, etc. before installing it, so I haven't cranked it. Timing chain, BEB, injectors, and pump just replaced / tuned. Options?

Doesn't look bad to me. I would not bother cleaning unless you are rebuilding the head.

However, take a look at the same spots on your intake valves. Toyota's diesels that have EGR and PCV can have a lot of crud in the intake and on the backs of the intake valves. Not sure if the 1HDT has this problem....

No EGR or PCV on the 1HD-T.

I am currently in the process of rebuilding the head on my 1 hdt and found the intake valve depoisits were unreal. Supposedly 200k kilometers on the engine, blow by didn,t seem bad. Thevalves and intake seats were in poor shape. surprisingly compression was still not bad worst cylinder 430 best 470.
The depoisits dont seem that bad on your valves. If it is apart clean it up for sure. If you do try cleaning be carefull not to scratch the valve.
I did some port and polish work too.
