Hi Guys any1 can tell me the affect of the following on Aero dynamics (will it affect the mpg) and whether its useful or not?
1- Bug/stones deflector
2- Side window wind deflector (i drive mainly in Dusty Sandy terrain)
3- Top-Rear "wing" wind deflector thing (i have a twin tires holder if it makes any diff)

On the first two I'd guess none to trivial decrease
On the last, trivial increase, spoilers reduce negative airflow, but on a lumbering brick i doubt it makes any meaningful difference other than reduce dust on the back window.

Does it keep the dust/sand out? and the bugs/stones away from the windshield?

1. Bug deflector will damage the paint on the hood. Effect on mileage=negligible.
2. I have side window deflectors, would have never bought them myself. But my rig came with them and I like them. Effect on mileage=negligible.
3. Rear wing. Some will claim that these hurt MPG, I disagree. The effect either way is not significant. Boxy vehicles tend to build up a vacuum behind them which increase wind drag. The deflector breaks up the vacuum bubble, so, even though the deflector adds wind drag, the net effect may actually improve aerodynamics. They also cut the dust buildup on the rear of the rig. So your cloths stay clean when you open the back for lunch.:hillbilly:

Personally, I like the rear deflector and the window deflectors. Their effect on aerodynamics is prolly not worth considering. Run whatever works for you.

If you really want to improve MPG, 86 the roof rack.

BTW, rear deflectors like this aren't doing you much good.:hillbilly:

My aim is not to improve MPG (already changed the Carb) rather than keep dust and sand away. My concern is whether these things would have -ve effect on MPG (i don't expect +ve :)) beside doing their job of course :)
I have a huge ARB roof rack (the car came with it), i don't feel like taking it off as i feel that its expensive :D and it has a awing :) (which is veryyy useful in Egyptian SUN

The roofrack is going to do far more (negative) to the mpg than any bug deflector, and even then I bet it's not more than 1 mpg. Isn't gas cheap in the middle east, or is that a misconception?

Not in all of the Middle East :))))), but certainly its cheaper than Europe and US. But again, with much much less yearly income!. so Fuel price is relatively high in Egypt (no al mid east for sure:) )

Installing aftermarket accessories professionally for years i can only recommend AutoVentvisors for windows- While not a huge fan, the 80's poor windshield/window design/useless drip rails warrants them- Drove a 60 daily for 12+ years - and that truck had perfect airflow/rain did not come in - didn't even messs your hair up- When installed correctly on 80 they look great and Certainly helps with wind/dust rain and noise - Leave windows cracked 2" indefinitely in any condition while parked for great ventilation. Honestly, any 90's and up vehicle should have em-I've replaced lots of shot master window switches from rain going in -esp Fords. If i was in the desert i'd have those giant bubble ones which look ridiculous - but function over form in the desert
Bugflectors cert reduce highway mileage as much a 1 mpg on some applications- slight help for hood/windscreen chips.
Rear wings do help keeping rear clean- but requires drilling/well nuts -things we try to avoid in NEast. Drill away in the desert - that is what they do there

I agree with the postings so far. Recently removed my deflector and roof rack. Have not yet checked gas mileage. In any case the stock roof rack is not very good and the mounts are a source of rust - you are better of without it. Rear deflector removal did add a significant amount of dust to rear area and as I do a lot of dirt/gravel road driving I am contemplating putting it back.

Good travels!

The only reason the hood deflector causes any damage is because the rubber stubs are mounted incorrectly. The rubber stubs need to be mounted on the hood and not the deflector.

The paint on my hood is jacked because of a deflector. They seem to be a waste of money. Plenty of other things to spend money on for a cruiser.

My Lexus hood deflector and sunroof deflectors came off the showroom floor. Both of them have/had the Lexus logo on them. The hood deflector I noticed right away when it was removed. I only took it off because it took a direct hit from a rock. Compressed onto the snubber and broke off one side of the deflector. So I removed the whole thing and was amazed to see that there were no scratches at all under it. Now, years later I have plenty of little scratches and nicks. The deflector was also a contributing factor to me massacering a dozen or so bats in Sequoia. I can't remember if they all smashed into my windshield because I had it on and the airflow forced them into my windshield or if I had just taken it off and then they committed suicide on my windshield. I can't remember which. But it was the same trip where the deflector was broken.

Sunroof deflector. Been there since day one so I can't say if its useful or not other than to say that if I happen to have the sunroof open when its sprinkling/light rain outside, it never lands inside as long as I am moving.
