I am worried about the recent front diff whining noise thread and going to do the diff oils / transfer / tranny oils (first time since purchase).

I couldn't find a complete list of how much I need to buy, so I looked through the 2004 LC FSM and found the quantities recommended. I'm assuming my 2000 LX will be the same.

Here's what I got; please add to the list if there are other oils / greases / etc. to add!


Engine Oil
------------
Drain and refill:
w/ Oil filter change: 6.8 liters (7.2 US qts, 6.0 Imp. qts)
w/o Oil filter change: 6.4 liters (6.8 US qts, 5.6 Imp. qts)

Dry fill:
8.0 liters (8.5 US qts, 7.0 Imp. qts)

API grade SL Energy-Conserving or ILSAC mul- tigrade engine oil.


Automatic Transmission Fluid

Great info. What would be even better is to know what recommended brand or oil to use, cost aside.

I need help!!!

I am about to change the front/back differential gear oil and transfer case oil. I have change engine oil but never done this. I want to make sure I have the right gear oil type and correct crush washer types. I have read forum recommendations (there are many) and still confused.

Please tell me if I am correct:
Gear oil type for all 3=75w-90 (I am going with Royal Purple, lives in Texas)
Transfer case crush washer= #90430-18008
Front/Back differential crush washer= #12157-10010
 
I recently changed my transfor case, and front and rear diffs using m1 synthetic 75-90 ls. So far it seems to run smoother.

Just a few points to watch for:
If you have an LSD then you need to add a friction modifier or have suitable oil. I believe Royal Purple 75W-90 has a modifier already added.
Make sure you can remove filler plugs first before draining the oil.
Part numbers for washers are okay but #90430-18008 is plain aluminium type and not a crush washer.
You will need a 10mm Allen key for the front differential plugs. Best obtain a socket type so that you can re-torque them.
Remember the magnetic plugs go back in the drain holes.
If the rear differential drain and fill plugs are difficult to remove then try a 15/16 inch socket for a tighter fit, rather than 24mm.
Finally, before you start, have a plan on how you are going to refill oil into the differentials and transfer case.

Yes, and thank you for the answer. I am asking these questions b/c, I hate to start something and then figure out either don't have the correct oil, parts or tools.

One for question please---From your post, I am assuming crush washer #12157-10010 will fit front/rare diffs and the transfer case?

Just to clarify, the front and rear differentials use the crush washer #12157-10010 on both their fill and drain plugs. The transfer case uses the plain washer #90430-18008 on both fill and drain plugs. Finally, please make sure you support the vehicle properly when working underneath.

Great list, thanks for compiling it!

Why is it that nearly everything can be drained nearly completely except the transmission? 11.2 quarts on a dry fill, but only 3.2 quarts on a drain and refill? Where does the other 8 quarts sit?

That's no different than any other vehicle with an auto trans...more fluid in the converter, internal trans passages, and the coolers than in the drain pan.

Going back to the Amsoil list, I simplify fluid changes by using...

Toyota Long Life or Zerex Asian coolant.

M1 5W-30 engine oil.

M1 75W-90 gear oil for diffs and TC.

M1 synthetic grease for U-joints and slip joints on the driveshafts.

M1 Dexron II/III atf.

Amsoil NGLI #1 with moly for front hub spindle bearings.

thanks for the list Steve, ill likely do the same this week.

regarding the transmission, the only way to truly freshen the ATF at home is to complete multiple drains/refills, 3 quarts at a time?

Correct. A thread here someplace calculates how many flushes on dirty fluid would be needed to get it close to a complete flush. I seem to have no issues just draining and replacing ~ 4 quarts at the same time I drain and refill the diffs and transfer case; that's every 2 years or ~ 20K.

Not true. It's fairly easy to change out all your ATF.

WS ATF Flush Procedure

This is for a five speed, but I have the four speed and it was pretty easy to piece all the information together.
