A trolling motor is a smaller auxiliary motor used on boats to move them around at slow speeds, the way the water splashed around the front of the grill looked like an outline of a small outboard. An attempt at humour on my part.
Did your friend's truck have any delayed, or damage that showed up later due to being in that deep water?

Drysuit and ski vest ( I don't bother with the vest anymore... lots of flotation in the drysuit) and the current making waves and wake around the rig... yep it can be a deceptive picture. Especially cropped close so that the snow on the mountains behind me is not showing.

We have never told the whole story about what happened, out of respect for our friendship with the driver of the '40. ;)


Suffice it to say some bad decisions were made and there was lack of river crossing experience aplenty the day he went in. The got very lucky and none was hurt (or killed which was a real possibility looking back at it).

They almost made it across... well, in the end, the rigs made it across, but they were on a cable or two when they finally went feet dry. :)

If they had a little better understanding of what they were undertaking, they could have safely crossed about 200 yards upriver at that time of year. In actuality though I would be surprised to hear that anyone but myself and the folks who were with me have crossed this river. The smaller fork which feeds this section... which people DO cross... eats a couple of rigs a year. For a long time it averaged keeping at least one every couple of years.

I did a writeup about the recovery and Gina put some pictures with it. it ran in Trails a few years back and has been linked to in threads here on mud a few times. I think that Jim Brantley still hosts the story on his site.

A google search for "Mark Whatley Knik River" should bring it up.

I don't get it. Perhaps it is the results of Cabin Fever or too much Vodka. Actually, my money is or both. That water had to be bloody cold and the water dunking seemed to have no reason behind it. I wonder how many relays he fried. :meh:

Seems to be just another competition/staged event. Not any different than a lot of other events where people push their rigs or abuse them even. Not sure there is reason to denigrate them unless you feel that way about all such events?

I would call that a bit fast, as he was pushing up under the bow wave. A little slower and the water at his grill hood would have been significantly lower.

The depth and current were actually non-remarkable. But the fact that he was on a bridge makes it a bit more attention getting. Hopefully what appears to be guardrails under the surface are in fact!

I would worry more about being pushed sideways on a paved surface than on a natural rock riverbed.

That Palmer river crossing is a good example to watch... nice speed and deep enough to get your attention without being overly worrisome.

Ya, of course I hate all these events. :grinpimp:

Seriously, I have watched a lot of 4WD comps - cross country, winch, hill climbs, etc - and this is the first one that I have seen where the objective appears to be to sink your rig in reverse into water so deep you have zero chance to ever get traction. But he, if that's your thing, go for it. We've got lots of ice cold deep mucky water around here, for those from the hot south who want to have a go at it.

Just to keep the thread on tech. Here is how you properly load a 70 series onto canoes to get across deep water. ;)
