I have a Warn 8274 with the following data plat info and wondering how to date it.

SNL 90702
EK8

E = May

K = 11th working day of the month (i.e., not including weekends or holidays)

8 = the year; in your case almost certainly 1978 (but it could be 1988?).

So, May 15, 1978.

Warn Date Codes on 8074 or 8274 winches

I wonder why it has such a low serial number.

90270 is low?

May 1978 is the earliest it could possibly be; the first year for the 8274 was 1974 (hence the "74" in the model number).

1978 would be my guess also, I have a Dec 1977 8274 date code LA7 ser # 72755 with metal controller plug socket..(they switched to plastic in 1980ish)...I assume yours has the metal socket? Would be nice if someone set up a database for these to track ser# , date codes, small changes with photos we could upload

I know this is a really, really old thread… but I just have to say thanks for the info here, to help identify. I happened to pick up a fully functional 8274 just the other day… it’s going on an FJ40, but it was their “Jeep Special Edition”, with a 66764 serial number and a manufactured date code of JF7, which I now know to be October 6, 1977. The fun thing about that is that the date code on my “1978” FJ40 is actually October 1977… the same month as the ol’ 8274 is going on. I couldn’t have planned it that way, in my search for a decent, affordable classic 8274. I even got to hear the familiar “zzzzzzzzing!” sound on the free spool test. Sometimes it’s the little things that make me happy...
