I have an even cheaper fix, how about folded up paper. Or if you are a true Baller then folded up 1$ good emergency money as well. :D
No $1 bills here in Canada - have to use $5's

What a response!

Didn't think this topic would get so many responses. Thanks!

The 3m Velcro (soft side) sounds like a good plan. It's probably hidden and will hold the vent in place.

I was unaware of the crotch vent until I just checked. In 1994 my cruiser was probably top notch for comfort! I still like the way she rides!!!

that what I use .. just one side of it ( the soft side )

I think I'm going to trade my pennies for felt!:hhmm:

An easy and very inexpensive fix is black felt (like what is used under lamps and stuff) I found in the crafts section at wally-world.
Just cut small narrow strip, peel backing, insert into gap above and below the vent and carefully press into slot with thin tool, preferably wood.
It mimics the original felt perfectly and no one can tell it's there.

I just took them out, removed the little broken studs, put in some little metals studs made from whatever i found in the garage. I used JB weld to place them and build up the diameter. Then i just sanded them smooth and stuck the vents back in the bracket.

What I did was removed the vent from the truck. With a heat gun apply heat to the side of the vent (the side that has the pivot)) and when the plastic is soft bend the back edge of the vent outwards a slight amount. This will provide a greater friction surface after you pop the vent back in it's place. The result will be vents that no longer flop down, yet are still adjustable - and no pennies!!

I used sticky felt pads which seem to work OK. My vent vanes were also pointing in weird directions, too. They're all connected in back by a strip of plastic with holes every ~1/2". A small zip tie cut to length and then drilled for the vane nibs works very well at getting them all to agree on a direction. Just a quick, easy, DIY-FYI.

TLCnoob- I have the same problem with getting all the vanes to point the same way. Dumb question, but how the heck do I get the center vent out of the dash to perform the fix you described? This is on a '97, but I assume the process is the same.

I bought a variety pack of felt “dots” with the adhesive backing at Lowe’s.

The slightly thicker ones that are ~5/8” round work perfect.

Mebbe $4 tops, enough dots to do a fleet of 80’s.

fleet
(flēt)
n.
1. A number of warships operating together under one command.
2. A number of vessels having a shared origin, purpose, or area of operation: the Japanese merchant fleet; the NorthPacific fishing fleet.
3. A group of vehicles, such as taxicabs or airliners, owned or operated as a unit.

Com-fleet failure due to vent direction malfunction. Sounds catastrophic! I like definition #2, but #3 might also work. Can we do a felt dot group buy?

Can these be yanked out from the front without breaking? or do I have to pull more stuff apart?

I cut a finger off of a black nitrile rubber glove and wedged it under the vent...worked like a charm until I take the dash apart next week and use rubber o-rings on the studs.

Probably a stupid question, but I am struggling to figure out how to remove the existing vents from the dash without removing the dashboard itself. I've tried different pry tools and can't seem to get the vents or the entire trim piece with the vent/register in it.

Is there a how-to or thread on how to do this? I must suck at searching because I can't find anything on this.

I used a 1/4 inch wood dowel. Removed the vents. Drilled out the spot where the peg broke off and JB welded the dowel in place once it set up, I used a dremel to shape and remove excess material. Also put some loop side velcro inside the vent registers go. Works great.
