i was just in wallmart and they had the rope light $20. a little more then what i payed. it the thin light rope about 2 to 3 mm thick.

Dash Box with LED Dash Illumination
I received my two Aluminum powder coated LED Bullets yesterday. Very nice gloss black finish. I installed one in my dash box centered and about 1" from the bottom edge. Even though it is not centered between the switches it still easily illuminates all the switches. You can easily read the switch labels. Best of all, it is not too bright.
I pulled the dash box and laid out the location of the factory hole that the illumination wiring feeds through for the factory dash pad light. The hole in the dash is about 9/16" dia. I put a 1/2" hole in the dash box and remounted the box. I then used a grommet for a 1/2" hole that is meant for a 1/8" thick panel. This let the grommet which is 3/4" OD completely seal both the holes in the dash and the box. The ID of the grommet I used is 5/16”. I soldered the factory wires to the LED wires and put adhesive lined heat shrink tubing over each solder joint. I then put a length of split loom sleeving over the wiring, the exposed threads of the LED (5/8") and through the grommet hole. When I understand how to take a quality night time photo with only the dash illumination I will post photos of the install and the results. Just where the hell is that tripod.
Also, I wanted to say again that converting the bulbs to LEDs in my instrument cluster and light switch made a dramatic improvement in my night time vision.
