I recently bought a brown dash board cap for my fj62 from SOR on clearence. It is basically a thin plastic dash mold. My question is does this replace the current dash pad which seems to be softer and possibly has foam under it, or does it just go over top of it? How do these things work? Sorry if this sounds stupid.

I may be mistaken but I think it mounts to the existing dash pad as a cover. You may have to use an adhesive of some kind to mount it.

Yep, it's just a cap to cover the existing pad. Clean the original dash, then glue on the new cover.
I've had them on some cars & trucks. They never look perfect, but it can be a big improvement over a really cracked dashpad.

I'd go light on the adhesive so you can pull it later if you want to. Maybe use some silicone or similar.

Be forewarned that these dash covers decrease the clearance around dash openings for the instrument panel and climate control panel, making it harder to take these things off and often causing you to break the moldings when you try to put them back in.

The ones I've used have worked great with only a little tightness around the a/c panel. The secret is to clean both sides (inside the cap, outside the dash) with rubbing alcohol, after scrubbing both with 3M scotch brite. Gives a good tooth to the adhesive. Put the adhesive on in random blots...about 1" in diameter, no straight, long lines. Then, you'll need a large assortment of bungees, and a 2x4 or 1x4. Once the thing is in place, bungee it everywhere you can think of from the defrost vents down to something underneath the dash. Place the 2x under the bungees along the long flat part on the top. You want this thing to be held TIGHT. (10 or so bungees minimum). Walk away for 24 hours. Then remove everything and your cap will look great. I've done a dozen or so 60's this way and all turned out very nice...not too much silicone near the outside edges where it'll run out from under.

I did not have much luck with my $OR dash cap. I had a big ugly crack in my dash that ran all the way from the windshield to the instrument cluster panel. About four months after I put on the cap, it cracked in the same place as the crack in the pad underneath. I have since bought a used replacement dash from cruiserparts.net and am happy with that. I do wonder if my cracked cover may have been prevented by using more glue, less glue, filling in the crack with something . . . etc...???????

Probably overglued. It should look like it has measles, but not plastered and no long lines.

I've heard the key is, is not to over glue. The cover needs to be able to expand and contract. Just use enough RTV so it stays on there.

The PO of my rig bought one but never glued it on; I'm more than happy to let it sit there, it doesn't make any noise, it doesn't fall off, and if I need to disassemble the dash, no problem, I can just take it off and then put it back on.

i'll second dashtops.com

never done one in a 60, but i've done a 40, and now my pig. everyone here says don't over glue...i've always put a "ample amount around the edges...otherwise, i've heard it will warp. i don't put any in the centers at all.

the caps they sell come with "silicone" and i use most of the tube around the edges. a couple of 2x4s and lots of clamps for a few hours on a hot day and it's done.
