Damn oil filter location

One trick I've used is wrapping a plastic bag (grocery bag or zip lock works best) around the fitler just before it comes off. I hold onto the bag and let the filter and about 90% of the oil fall into the bag. This avoids a lot of messy cleanup afterwards :D

Doesn't matter of the methods used to catch the spilled oil when removing the filter, we all seem to have to wipe the engine, axle afterwards anyway. So why not just pull the pan to under the area and let the oil seeps down? Just leave it a few minutes & wipe the excess oil afterwards (and call it rust protection) - I don't recall seeing anywhere in the area that could collect much of this spilled oil.

As far as removing the filter, it has never taken me more than 3 grunts to do the job using bare hand(s). I have a few filter removal tools but they are used only sometimes on friends' cars (which I don't work on) where the filters are mounted downward & had a ton of oil collected on it (almost impossible to grip).

Amen on the 3vze being the worst Toyota truck for oil filter placement. But Yeah, just buy Oil by the 4 or 5 quart jug... it's usually a lot cheaper.

I have a Tacoma. I have the 3.4L V6, which I think is a 5VZFE. Do you guys have the 4 cyl engine?

I would think a 4Cyl engine would be MUCH easier than a V6.

Trust me, the Tacoma 4-cyl filter is a real PITA - but after 4 years of owning one I had the technique down so that I could get it changed without spilling a drop! Now I just need to develop a technique for the 80. :)

Been using

I've always used a K&N HP1002 oil filter on my 1997 LX450. I too use the handtighten only principle and just reach down from the fenderwell and spin it off. There are a souple of drips to wipe afterwards but no real Exxon-Valdez type mess.

the 3vze is the 3.0L v.6, and belive me the first gen of these engines are a real pain. They had the filter located further back on the block than the new versions. I have the new version and it's still a pain in the ass to get to. Really its just how tight you put it on that sets up how much of a pain it is to take off later.

Ha, the 3VZE in my 90 and my Tacoma make the LC look like a breeze.
